Government leaders appear increasingly likely to dare unrest by seeking to jail Anwar Ibrahim

malay-anwar4Despite a convincing electoral victory that returned Anwar Ibrahim to Parliament a week ago as opposition leader, it is growing increasingly certain that stalwarts in the United Malays National Organisation intend to try to put him in jail over allegations of sodomy by a former aide in his office.

The vehicle to do it is a bill rushed through the parliament that will compel Anwar to provide a fresh sample of DNA in the case, which was brought by Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan, who lodged a police report at the end of June charging that the former deputy prime minister and finance minister had raped him in a luxury apartment in a Kuala Lumpur suburb.

The bill was tabled for second reading in Parliament last week on the day Anwar won an overwhelming victory in the Permatang Puah by-election that returned him to electoral politics. Home Minister Syed Hamid Albar told reporters the timing was only coincidental. Under its provisions, it provides for compulsory extraction of DNA in sexual abuse cases. Anyone refusing to give a sample would be liable to a fine of up to RM10,000 and a possible year in prison.

Anwar has refused to provide the sample, saying that it will be used to fabricate evidence and that the government already has his profile from 1998. The government says the sample from that time is too old. Anwar has said he has an unshakeable alibi for the time the offense allegedly took place. The physician who examined Saiful issued a medical report and a statutory declaration saying there was no evidence of sodomy. Nonetheless, the government, in the end, charged Anwar for consensual sodomy, which is punishable by up to 20 years in jail, although it didn’t charge Saiful for engaging in consensual sex.

If Anwar is arrested, say observers in Kuala Lumpur, there is a likelihood of riots. When he was originally arrested on the charges in July, hundreds of people took to the streets in Kuala Lumpur’s “golden triangle” Chinese area of the downtown, and at least seven truckloads of Field Reserve Unit troops lined the streets near the police headquarters where Anwar had been taken by officials.

The continuing turmoil and rising tension are beginning to take their toll on investor attitudes. Bloomberg reported Friday that the widening budget deficit, caused by Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi’s tax cuts and spending boosts to fend off the opposition’s move to take over the country, is putting its credit rating and currency at risk. Inflation spiked to 8.5 percent in July, a 26-year high.

Abdullah Badawi, facing a rising insurrection within UMNO, called for unity Sunday as his government continued to crumble. Anwar has vowed to bring down the government by the middle of this month and take over as prime minister. Concern is rising within the party that if Anwar does indeed take over, he will wreak vengeance on those at the top of the party who brought the charges against him this time and previously when he served six years in prison on similar charges. He has repeatedly accused the government, and particularly the judiciary, of corruption. Deputy Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak appears to be a particular target.

The first time Anwar faced such allegations was in 1998. Then being groomed to succeed Mahathir Mohamad, the former and longest serving premier, he was sacked and expelled from UMNO and was eventually jailed for sodomy and abuse of power, although the sodomy allegations were overturned by the courts in 2004 after Mahathir left power. Anwar was released in that year after serving his sentence for the corruption conviction. He and his supporters have always said that the charges were trumped-up and part of a political conspiracy to destroy his political career. He has filed charges against Musa Hassan, the Inspector General of Police, and attorney general Abdul Ghani Patail, for falsifying the evidence that put him in prison.

This time around, the allegations surfaced in similar conditions -- a Barisan Nasional, or national ruling coalition, under siege. In March national elections, the Barisan lost its half-century grip on its two-thirds parliamentary majority, which allows it to amend the constitution but it can still pass legislation, and five states in the March 8 general election. Pakatan Rakyat, a coalition formed after the election, brings together three unlikely partners -- the fundamentalist Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS), the Chinese-dominated Democratic Action Party (DAP), and Anwar's predominantly Malay and middle-class Parti Keadilan Rakyat, or People's Justice Party.

The decision to go after Anwar on the sexual perversion charges is viewed by many as a sign of the ruling coalition’s weakness instead of playing a waiting game in the parliament. There is a considerable likelihood that the opposition coalition will come apart, given enough time, because of the philosophical disparities between them. Leaders of PAS have already asserted that the fundamentalist Islamic party should lead the Pakatan coalition because it has greater Malay membership than Anwar’s party, Parti Keadilan, and that it has the right to the premiership. PAS leaders have complained that they have not been given enough say in the local governments that the opposition overthrew in the March elections. Having PAS in charge of the government would be anathema to the other two parties in the coalition, particularly the DAP, but also to a large extent Anwar’s own party, which is made up of middle-class Malays who find PAS’s brand of Islam too restrictive.

Thus Anwar himself is in somewhat of a race against time. If he doesn’t get his 30 supposed members of the Barisan to defect to his side before Sept. 16, as he promised, he faces the possibility that his coalition will weaken – although he could be girded by three more by-elections. Losing candidates in three districts in the states of Perlis, Kedah and Sabah have all filed court challenges seeking to overturn elections. An UMNO source says they could indeed be overturned and, given the current malaise with the government over inflation, corruption and other issues, there is a good chance that the opposition would sweep the seats, making Abdullah Badawi’s position even more precarious.

Adding to that, Bernama, the government-owned news service, reported last week that an UMNO branch on the island of Langkawi passed a resolution last week asking the octogenarian former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad and his wife, Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali, to return to the party that a furious Mahathir quit in May after a royal commission recommended that he be investigated for improper judicial appointments. A Melaka UMNO branch supported voted to support the resolution as well. Mahathir has offered to rejoin the party in an effort, he says, to save it.

S E Asia in 50-100 Years\' Time
written by Proud Chinese , September 03, 2008
As a keen Mainland Chinese observer on the Malaysian-Indonesian-S'porean political/historical scenes for the last 10-20 years, I am utterly disgusted/ashamed by the barbarity & naked/uncivilised racism/brutality of the native Malays/Indonesians towards their minorities, especially the local naturalised Chinese communities, throughout their short but evil-to-the-core history. Mainland Chinese are forever being reminded of the pogroms/atrocities whith which their blood brethrens were & are still being subjected to in these 2 evil countries. Once we have built up our aircraft carrier fighting fleets, probably by 2012 or even earlier, we shall reestablish our traditional dominant role in the South Seas where we definitely would like to exert our traditional influence. We really hope that those bastards in Malaysia & Indonesia who raped, tortured, burnt & killed our blood brethrens in the name of 'Malay supremacy' will be brought to account for their historic crimes & punished accordingly. If you bastards think that you can use your population numeric superiority (26 million in Malaysia & 250 million in Indonesia) to bully & humiliate your minority citizens, let me remind you that our one Guangdong Province (64 millions) is enough to take on Malaysia & Guangdong Fujian Zejiang Jiangsu Provinces combined will be enough to take on Indonesia quite comfortably, let alone all 24 provinces & 4 autonomous municipalities in the whole of China. If you bastards still persist in threatening our peaceful/helpless brethrens, wait till we sweep in when we have fully developed our military strength & see who will get thrown out.

What a simplistic and ignorant view of the world! Just plug into the American Ecomic machine and everything is gung ho. Has Tan CC ever read economics? For that matter, poltiics or jurisprdence? Why is Taiwan and many other countries plugged into the US economy floundering? Is Goh Chock Tong related to LKY? Yet he became PM. The next PM will definitely not come from the Lee clan. There's none in politics. If the Lee "clan" were interested in money, couldn't they have a much easier life than go into politics? Chinese hacks? Let's read the list of Indians in the Singapore government. S Nathan , President. Jayakumar, Deputy PM. Shamugunathan, Finance Minister. Shamugan, Law Minister. Sasidivan, Second Foreign Minister. Iswaran, Senior Minister,Trade and Industry. Where in the world have you seen a minority race holding such power? And there are many in the civil service (example, JM Pillay) and the professions (law, medicien) who are contributing hugely to the country. So let's debate intelligently. Don't invent 'facts' to suit your prejudices

Neutrality
written by Neighbour , September 03, 2008
Is Anwar good for Singapore? I don't really know.

If he became PM and copied what Singapore is doing then we might well face a stiff competitor in the various fields later. Being aware of their non-renewable mineral & forestry resources albeit sheer physical size, it might begin to pose a big challenge to us and might even overtake us if we are complacent. Do we want that?

Many people don't realise that having a corrupt government plus a people on crutches in the neighborhood is good for us in any competition or race.

See S$1 buys more than RM$2, lopsided foreign exchange reserves & lopsided per capita income, 7th richest per capita country in the world, best seaport, best airport, etc.

When they scoff & drive out meritocracy we gained from their outflow of brains over the years. Remember, the people who launched SIA skyhigh, won over Pedra Branca, invented NeWater, etc. All these people are ex-Malaysians who came over to Singapore looking for hope & self-fulfillment. Their personal achievements profited SINGAPORE at large.

So, Singaporeans we don't have to take side cos Anwar (if you had watched all his speeches in You-Tube) is no ordinary Malay I tell you.

Remember once prosperous and stable Zimbabwe? What about Sri Lanka, another 'could have been' state? Where are you going Malaysia?

I saw an ad in a magazine the other day intended to attract foreign investors. Why would anyone invest in Malaysia right now?

The truth is, Malaysia has so much to offer and so much potential. If a few evil men or a minority of discriminating religious zealots behaving like middle ages Christian kings choose to ruin this chance then Malaysia could also descend down the slippery slope to poverty.

I think Anwar should publicly declare that if he becomes PM he would declare a general amnesty against his foes and those who are being investigated for corruption even though they don't deserve it.

Malaysia needs a clean slate and an example of reconciliation, mutual respect and bridge building. Anwar must promote freedom of religion and equality of the races must be enshrined in the law. He may just secure himself a spot in history among the likes of Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Ghandi if he can achieve these things and in the process become Malaysia's true hero.

I pray for his success for his sake and for the sake of the people of Malaysia.

Winds of change to affect Singapore?
written by Tan CC , September 02, 2008
E.L.comments will irritate Lee Qon U in Singapore. However some interesting facts will put things in perspective regarding the state of the Judiciary in Singapore. Lee Qon U(LQU) first got rid of the jury; then he got rid of the Privy Council, because he lost his case against JB Jeya. Later Judge Sin-A-Day became not only judge, but prosecutor as well. Now he has even got rid of the"open court" to hear his cases. Everything that has to do with him is settled in chambers. Quite alarming! No, that's not all. Now the Judge even "requests" LQU's lawyer to alter the severity of the suit against FEER. Now, that is really alarming. Warning bells should be ringing in Singapore among the political elite. The state of Law and Order is being flushed down the drain by LQU. Will Singapore change? No. Why? Because all the political descendants of the PAP will benefit from the state of despotism. All they need to do is to plug into the American Economic machine and everything will be gung ho. This explains why Singabloodypore is doing well. No need to have any brains to do that. Just be somebody's lapdog. It has worked well all this time

WHAT IS HAPPENING IN MALAYSIA!
written by E. L. , September 01, 2008
WHAT IS HAPPENING IN MALAYSIA AND IN INDONESIA IS A CONTINUED STRUGGLE FOR TRUE JUSTICE AND TRUE DEMOCRACY. UNLIKE SINGAPORE WHICH IS RUN BY AN ELITE GROUP OF CHINESE POLITICAL HACKS WHO WITHOUT TRUE CONCENSUS OR PROPER DEMOCRATIC BEHAVIOUR RUN THE COUNTRY NOT BY THE PEOPLE FOR THE PEOPLE BUT BY HOW MUCH PRESSURE IT CAN PLACE ON ITS CITIZENS UNTIL THEY LEAVE SINGAPORE AND MOVE TO AUSTRALIA OR BECOME A BUNCH OF YES MEN ROBOTS WHO'S ONLY REASON TO EXIST IS TO MAKE A LOT OF MONEY AND MORE MONEY AND WHO CARES ABOUT ANYONE ELSE. A TRUE DEMOCRATIC SYSTEM ALLOWS IT'S CITIZENS TO CHOOSE FREELY WHOM EVER THEY WANT TO ELECT WHETHER HE/SHE IS A TALIBAN OR NOT. A TRUE DEMOCRACY DOES NOT EXIST IN SINGAPORE WHERE NO MATTER WHO YOU VOTE FOR ON ELECTION DAY IF YOUR NAME IS NOT RELATED TO LEE QON U YOU CAN NEVER HAVE A CHANCE IN HELL TO BECOME THE PRIME MINISTER OR PARTICIPATE IN ITS POWER INSTITUTIONS.WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME SINCE INDEPENDANCE FROM MALAYSIA DID SINGAPORE HAVE AN INDIAN OR MALAYSIAN PRIME MINISTER? NEVER - BECAUSE SINGAPORE IS A DICTATORSHIP IT DOES NOT ALLOW FOR PEACEFUL PROTESTS AND OPEN DEBATE IT DOES NOT GIVE THE OPPOSITION A CHANCE TO RUN THE GOVERNMENT IT LOOKS DOWN AT IT'S NEIGHBORING COUNTRIES WITHOUT ANY RESPECT. INSTEAD SINGAPORE DREAMS OF ONE DAY BLOWING UP ITS NEIGHBORS WITH THEIR MILITARY GUNS AND AMMUNITION IN ORDER TO KEEP THE STATUS QUO AND KEEP ITS NEIGHBORS LIVING IN POVERTY. DOWN WITH SINGAPORE AND LONG LIVE THE EMERGING DEMOCRACY IN MALAYSIA AND INDONESIA!
