| Another Questionable Death in Malaysia |

If Teoh Beng Hock had died in the custody of the police in Moscow or Chechnya, the death would have been all over the western media as yet another example of the brutality of the system. But because Malaysia buys lots of arms from the west, western tourists love Langkawi beaches, and Manchester United makes millions from its Malaysian fans, this appalling story rated the briefest of international mentions. Yet murder goes closer to top people in Malaysia than it does to their equivalents in Russia. Teoh was an aide to an executive councilor in the Selangor state government which is controlled by an opposition coalition including the Democratic Action Party (DAP) of which Teoh's boss was a senior member. He was found dead on the fifth floor roof of the Malaysia Anti-Corruption Commission building having allegedly jumped to his death after an interrogation. The story is not just a tragedy for Beng Hock, his family, fiancée and friends. It is yet another tragedy for the Malaysian system of law and justice. Exactly what happened at the Shah Alam, Selangor, of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission we shall probably never know. Cover-ups will go on indefinitely, as also in the case of the murder of Mongolian model and translator Altantuya Shaaribu , the pregnant former mistress of Razak Baginda a close associate of now prime minister Najib Razak who was killed by members of Najib's security detail. According to the MACC, Teoh's interrogation had ended some hours earlier but he had elected to stay at its offices, from which he later jumped. At the very least, if Teoh had killed himself it could only have been after mental or physical torture or administration of drugs by the MACC. Teoh was not the subject of investigation by the MACC, the agency said, only his boss. He was a former newspaper reporter for the Chinese daily Sin Chiew Jit Poh until joining the state government after the opposition victory last year. He was due to be married soon. The MACC may sound a worthy institution dedicated to clean government. But foreigners should not be fooled. Its interrogation of Yeoh was clearly aimed at trying to dig up something to pin on his boss and hence disrupt an opposition coalition already subject to the money politics which has helped keep the UMNO-led coalition in power at national level for more than 50 years. The MACC meanwhile has singularly failed to investigate the payment of "commissions" totaling €114 million to Najib's friend Razak Baginda for the purchase of French submarines while Najib was Defense Minister. The French-speaking Altantuya visited Paris with Razak Baginda during discussions with the French so was almost certainly privy to the deal and, by her own admission, later tried to blackmail Baginda. According to testimony which was not allowed in court, Najib was also present on one of these Paris visits. Indeed, according to a private detective who later recanted his testimony then disappeared, Najib himself had previously had a sexual relationship with Altantuya. The trial of Razak Baginda, who was acquitted, and two members of Najib's squad, who were found guilty, was a bizarre affair which made a mockery of justice. (see Asia Sentinel: Altantuya's Killers Judged Guilty) Yet western governments, which continue to lecture Russia and others on human rights and the rule of law for their own commercial reasons, continue to accord Malaysia's government and courts a liberal and democratic status which they lost two decades ago. The death of Teoh Beng Hock is yet another tragic illustration of how rotten the Malaysian system has become after years of one party rule, racialism and blatant corruption on a massive scale. Malaysian barbaric Goverment
written by Anak Malaysia , August 02, 2009
Shame on the Malaysia goverment! How undemocratic and the police should rename the organisation as Umno thugs instead Police Di Raja Malaysia. The police force are taxed funded by the public and should do their job of reducing and solving crimes, not acting like mafia on behalf the Umno politician who are witch doctors selling worthless propaganda, inciting fears among the Malays so their own race are forever under their thumb. I appeal to the Malay intellectuals to educate their own race Umno politician are hanging on to power so they and their cronies can plunder the wealth of the country. Compared to other the neigbhouring countries, Malaysia lack behind in development because of low standard of education and corruption. With low standard of education, it is easier for Umno to control the people because knowledge is power. Crimes are all time high because police aren't doing their job and act on interest of Umno. I appeal to the international communities to fight this corrupted goverment before it ends up like the military goverment in Mynmar.

The Police in Malaysia are the dangerous Thieves. I am ashamed to see all the reports. What is worse is that the Judiciary is a Corrupt Judiciary-I dont see any Justice for this young boy.I am ashamed that the Malaysian Government is pursuing the case against Anwar Ibrahim and Karpal-This country of mine -has become a Banana republic! I am ashamed of the state ofaffairs-whipping women in Malaysia , just as in Sudan-I thoought thjat Malaysia was a multiracuila country-Its going backwards, thanks to UMNO at all costs to stay in power-even to the brink of Talibanism- When you deal with the Taliban type Devil-be careful-they will talke over and half the Malaysian Malay Politicians will be whipped!!! At the end of the day, the normal Malay,Chinese and Indian man who has been brought up by strong religion with good values and appreciating diversity since the time of Tengku Abdual Rahman is very frightened to say anything. They are scared of the Malaysian Government. No many can be Karam Singh, Karpal Singh, James Puttucherry, Mr J Harun Hashim, Kit Siang and his wonderful son of course!!! These aregreat Malaysians with principles and values. But today, there is a strong elemt of fear.If you are not with UMNO-although a Malay you are in trouble-so the Malays have gone to the opposition and work for UMNO!!!!

The Decline of the Law in Malaysia to that of Sudan!
written by Lord Denning , July 29, 2009
In Malaysia, there is no law for the ordinary citizen.Every legislation today in Malaysia PROTECTS people in public office. That includes Judges in Malaysia, who are known to be corrupt like the Politicians who run the country. In the cabinet we have a former MB of Selangor who was arrested in Australia carrying thusands of dollars. As a Civil servant where did the money come from? So -same story with the Immigrant Toyo or is it Koyo.I really dont know who is a Malay now because that race has been higjacked by some vampire Muslims from outside the country-now its convenient to call them bumiputras.

The latter have two standards-one is for them to be Western. Many drink alchol freely in KL and are seen often in Hotel and dance halls with dancing girls-others are arrested for consuming alchol and whipped. Mind you in Kuantan, the Raja Muda is a frequently patron of Hyatt Kuantan and is always intoxicated with his many pals including the RM of Johor. So there are tow standards and two laws-Nazri's son can drink alchol and party with topless type women but this poor lady was arrested in Kyuantan and is facing the whip. This is the same in Sudan-where Lubna Hussein ( UN employee) is going to be administered 40 lashes for wearing a trousers. So Malaysia, like Sudan is travelling the same road.lawlessness is around the corner. Murders like the Sultan of Johor can escape.Others like Mokthar Hashim ( Former Minister) pardoned for murder but daily for drug possession or guns-non-Malays are being hanged by laws that dont provide a jury, reverses the burden of proof and is heard by a single Judge. The point I make is that only the elite and royaly have special privileges in Malaysia-The PM does not need to prove that he was not involved in a murder or corruption. Its this disregard for the rule of law that resulted in the death of Kugan and this young man. I just saw a video of the Malaysian police beating a suspect that is going around internationally.I am saddened that our wonderful country is going to the dogs. The only people who can reverse all this is the malay population. But so far Zaid Ibrahim is the only vocal ooponent of racial discrimination and the reinstatement of the rule of law.How long can Malaysia go like this-I expect that the Malay population demand a change and make everyone equal.I had hoped that the inquest would be dealt by a Chinese Judge. After Government ABCs-like Augustine Paul -the credibility is gone! report abuse

Final Solution
written by MoveMountain , July 25, 2009
Enough is said & heard about this stupid nation. Clearly, there are many unhappinesses among the people:UMNO is obviously moronic & evil. Keadilan may be expediently more moderate but they are just an off-shoot of UMNO, hence there are obviously many opporturnists from ex UMNO just waiting under the surface to reemerge & everything may turn out to be just the same afterall. PAS may be clean-living for their fear of God, but their much-hyped theocratic nirvana may just turn out to be a pipe dream never achieveable in any real world.

May be it is best that the nation be split peacefully into many independent states with each race governing itself. Will some big powers please do us a favour to liberate us from our miseries & send these UMNO thugs in suits & their various instruments of evil like their thuggery police, army, civil servants etc to their deserved cruel ends? report abuse

Is This the Standard of Journalism in the New Straits Times Today? pt 3
written by Malaysian Heart , July 24, 2009
(cont'd above)

With Malaysia at the crossroads in the aftermath of 8/3/08, advocacy journalism has become a "weapon" in the political "war" to determine which path our country takes. It is a genre of journalism that intentionally and transparently adopts a non-objective viewpoint, usually for some social or political purpose. It is certainly not new, and it is not disreputable per se; The Economist is an example of a publication that practices it quite well. However, while advocacy journalists may justifiably eschew the newsroom journalists' credo of objectivity (i.e. being neutral and not taking sides in their reporting), this does not absolve them of all standards of ethical journalism. Here is the bare minimum that they have to meet (adapted from here and here): 1) They must acknowledge and declare their editorial position and bias up front. Doing so will inform readers as to where the writer is coming from and allows them to employ their critical faculties accordingly. Working to promote a particular point of view without disclosing one's true stance is shilling. 2) They must be truthful, accurate, and credible; ensure that every statement they make is factual and based on evidence from neutral sources. In other words don't spread propaganda, don't take quotes or facts out of context, "don't fabricate or falsify", and "don't judge or suppress vital facts or present half-truths". Requiring that media outlets refrain from spreading untruths and falsehood is not too much to ask for, is it? 3) Even if they do not provide equal time for their opponents views, they must at least understand & address their opponents' relevant points & criticism - they must never ignore, trivialize or distort them. Be fair and thorough. 4) They must use honest arguments; do not resort to the crooked thinking and dishonest tricks commonly used in arguments. Avoid slogans, ranting, and polemics. Instead, "articulate complex issues clearly and carefully." 5) They must not allow their bias to turn into rose coloured glasses, or worse, a blind spot. They must not spare their own cause the tough, critical questions and scrutiny. Without adhering to these most basic of standards, the resulting media "product" will be nothing more than propaganda, and bad one at that. If it had come from a political party's media mouthpiece, the article might have been just bearable. After all, political propagandists and shills may rightly claim that they are not bound by any ethics, and have no interest in helping readers to seek the truth. They may thus abandon even the pretence of reasoned discourse and honest logic, and (perhaps to please their masters), be as partisan and as chauvinist as they please. However, coming from the New Straits Times, the news outlet that is Malaysia's oldest newspaper still in print, and which claims that "Our goal is to be the preeminent provider of news, information and entertainment and to achieve total customer satisfaction through our professional and highly regarded workforce that values quality, integrity, innovativeness and personal service", it is nothing short of an abject disgrace. It stands to reason that the NST's lofty goal will remain out of reach so long as its journalists (and editors) behave like members of the oldest profession, and not as members of an honourable one. report abuse

(Cont'd from above)

3) The writer committed (what I believe to be) the most serious affront to the profession of journalism: he subverted and twisted the meaning of words in a way that obscures the truth, to further his attack on his "opponents". Two examples from the article: a) Lynching, is "violent punishment or execution, without due process, for real or alleged crimes." It is a crime punishable by law in Malaysia, and it is what the writer accuses Pakatan Rakyat of doing to the MACC. Does the writer have any evidence to support this? If he did, he certainly did not share any of it with us in his article. The irony is that the exact opposite may be argued. Teoh Beng Hock was either a witness or a suspect in an alleged crime, and was, prima facie, in the custody of the MACC. If these two accounts of MACC's interrogation methods are reliable, then there is enough cause to suspect that Teoh too may have been the victim of high handed interrogation tactics. Did it stop there? Was there any physical violence used? These are reasonable questions to ask. The very nature of criminal investigations: the secrecy, the power differentials involved, our unfortunate history of deaths in custody, and the inescapable fact that whatever was done to Teoh was done in OUR NAME, makes it absolutely vital that we actively get to the bottom of the circumstances surrounding Teoh's death. Asking the tough questions and being skeptical about the answers we are given is not lynching, it is merely demanding accountability from our public servants. By turning the meaning of the word "lynch" on its head, this "wordsmith" from the NST has used his command of the English language to make a mockery of the idea that our government and law enforcement authorities are accountable to the Rakyat. b) Sycophant means "a servile self-seeker who attempts to win favor by flattering influential people". The writer used this word to describe Tunku Abdul Aziz Ibrahim, a former vice-chairman of Transparency International’s Board of Directors. To be sure, Tunku Aziz is a DAP member, but has the writer any evidence to show that Tunku Aziz has ever attempted to win favour by flattering influential people in DAP, Pakatan or anywhere else? If the favour of "influential people" is what Tunku Aziz sought, would the DAP have been the right party for him to join? One might think that there would have been more "favourable" opportunities elsewhere. (cont'd below) report abuse

Is This the Standard of Journalism in the New Straits Times Today?
written by Malaysian Heart , July 24, 2009
When a news organization's editorial policy is dictated by its owners, the quality of its journalism is often the first thing to go out the window (followed closely by its credibility, reputation and circulation figures). The general level of integrity and professionalism in our news media notwithstanding, I have to say that this "online exclusive" op-ed piece from the New Straits Times (22/7/09), entitled "They got their Royal Commission of Inquiry but will they stop their lynching?", is as egregious a case of journalistic misconduct as I have ever come across. Lest I be accused of making that claim just because I disagree with the article in question, please allow me share with you my reasons for saying so:
Votes: -1
1) The writer made a significant error of fact by claiming that the purpose of the Royal Commission of Inquiry was "to probe the chary [sic] death of Teoh Boon Hock". This is untrue because, as PM Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak himself said (bold emphasis mine): "The Royal Commission will be set up according to specific terms, which is to scrutinise and study the procedures related to interrogations that are used by the MACC. It will also identify if there were any violations of human rights during Teoh’s interrogation." The PM also made it clear that Teoh's death would be investigated by an inquest and not the RCI. This is definitely not what Teoh's family, Pakatan Rakyat leaders and many others have been asking for from the outset. Why is this error significant? Because the writer then went on to use his "fact" to attack the character and motives of Pakatan Rakyat leaders throughout the article, beginning from the headline itself. A major thrust of the article is to show that even when their demands have been met, PR leaders (ostensibly for selfish political reasons), will continue to criticize the RCI. It should have been quite obvious to the writer that their (and many others') demands were not met. He has misrepresented their position, and as of 1650 hrs on 24/7/09, this remains uncorrected. 2) The writer used at least two of the 38 dishonest tricks commonly used in argument, specifically: a) he used emotionally toned words. Against Pakatan Rakyat leaders, followers and actions, he had this to say, without any supporting evidence (emotive words in bold mine): * band of noxious supporters * toxic Pakatan demonstrations * defiant rants * this mob * sly pre-emption * Pakatan’s instigation * parrot his all-time favourite bellowing * pressing for a RCI * howls of protest * partisan party sycophant * sly pre-empts * Another sly pre-empting ploy * last week’s rampage * Pakatan Rakyat minions * brutish smugness * mob fury * lynching, Malaysian-style For the government, he has this instead: * most pragmatic decision * strongly endorsed the setting up of the RCI b) he attributed prejudices or dishonourable motives to his "opponents", again without offering any evidence in support. "They were almost certain of getting a favourable Cabinet response but the hyperboles and sly pre-emption that senior Pakatan leaders discharged seemed to have given the appearance that the goading provoked the Cabinet into agreeing to the RCI." "But let’s not be surprised that Pakatan would claim credit for their RCI ingenuity." "Pakatan leaders’ pressing for a RCI had a disingenuous purpose:... Pakatan people will be nudged aside from the glare of suspicion..." "Now anticipate the howls of protest, even if it makes sense to expand the scope of the RCI’s inquiry to include all possibilities." "Kit will find other specious means to further pile the burden of attestation on Najib to prove that the RCI is “absolutely independent” and will do their job fearlessly." "Pakatan Rakyat minions will insist no less than a guilty verdict, that some MACC perp pushed Teoh Beng Hock out of the 14th floor to his death for no reason other than wanting to torture the young man. Nobody said anything about this being a racial thing until Nazri, NST and these UMNO holigans claim it is a racial issue. And they warned the Opposition not to use this as a racial issue? Now on the issue of MACC- and the death of the young gentleman. The public is entitled as of RIGHT to know -how and why he died. The investigation cannot be done by government officials or BN sidekicks but by independent members who can verify that it was not torture leading to murder like in Kugan's case. MACC manufacturing evidence to persecute the Opposition
written by Milton Yap , July 21, 2009
From what Tan Boon Hwa described, the MACC is the Gestapo of Malaysia, tasked to create evidence against the Opposition. The amount involved with Tan is so tiny Ringgit 2,400, miniscule?. When the likes of Khir Toyo and the PKFZ involved millions and billions. So, there are two set of law, one BN law uncommon law and one common law for the Opposition.
Votes: +8
Taking the this line of thinking, the evidence against Anwar Ibrahim is also manufactured. The prosecution is so reluctant to let the defence examine their "evidence" Why are they worried? Worried that the "evidence" cannot stand up to examination? Was it manufactured and intended presented quickly to ambush the defence team and secure a quick conviction? Is it not a principle of natural justice to allow equal access to the evidence? if the evidence is indeed the truth, why the fear of allowing the defence access? It is clear that the whole apparatus of the federal government is set up and tasked to persecute the Opposition to perpetuate the rule of the BN. report abuse

Recently the BN government banned the component parties from using the phrase "ketuanan melayu, ketuanan islam". But this does not mean that they do not think of it and even to act on it. Thus you get this situation: the PM tries to console the grieving family but the DPM and the rest of UMNO are shouting at the top of their voices that it is nothing more than an unfortunate accident. The Malay mass media are even worse. It would appear that the Malays are happy about the whole issue. How is the DPM going to address the UMNO of JOHOR about the neccessity of including the non Malays in their planning and execution of projects? The dumb UMNO do not realise that their 30% comes from the Chinese; only the Chinese can give them the "chance" to improve themselves and to enrich themselves on the way up. The various "Development Corridors" are stagnant because of the NEP. The ruling BN has become so addicted to Piracy that the norm of sustained hardwork and self achievement has become nonexistent. The Malays now realise that their core values have disappeared. In it's place is the greed for power and easy wealth - both values from the piracy values of their ancestors. This incident will not go away for many years. It will trigger the placid Chinese to get up and do something about their future and that of their children. In the meantime the Malays will keep on their ultra jingoism in order to round up support for their addiction to power and wealth. It is the "time bomb" that is well known to Malaysians for many years. If the ruling BN is not careful, it will lose it's power in a conflagration that will see the power of the Malays disappear. There can be no other solution. Unless the government seizes the bull by the horns and bring the culprits/murderers to justice and in the process also bring the policies of the government to the line of moderation and common sense.

Everything is secret! Thanks to Mahathir Mohamed- I don’t blame the people in Honduras who were worried that their President was going to extend his leadership for many more years!! Malaysia does not need a PM for 22 years –neither do we need nepotism-and family members who want to continue being leaders in this country! After all the former DPM of Malaysia was beaten up-if that is not a yardstick of what the authorities can do-think again- what about the Police killing the Mongolian model or the poor Indian suspects “killed “ in prison. I say “killed”. The question arises whether this was what happened to this young man who had a bright and wonderful life! Is there going to be a commission? - Who is going to lead it? Can we have independent UN officials-we don’t trust the authorities. Everyone knows the state of affairs prevailing in Malaysia, and every one is entitled to say what they feel and know about what is happening to Malaysia -but I think it would be prudent to hear out a Former Minister of Law from Malaysia, who resigned because he had principles. Mind you he is not alone –there are two other Judges of the High Court of Malaya (Justice IDID and Sinnadurai) and a Former (I believe) Attorney General who resigned because of high integrity. Salleh Abbas was sacked! These are people with integrity, patriots, honest in thought for Malaysia and strong values. Mind you that Zaid was fired by UMNO for demanding that the Rule of Law be complied! I leave his words to speak for themselves! I would like to thank Asia Sentinel for the opportunity to let people have a right to be heard! That is what Walter Cronkite stood for! I hope Malaysian would also read the article on Anwar Ibrahim’s case in the Asia Sentinel because-all what is happening now is not a judgment on Anwar Ibrahim’s case-this is a trial by the public and the world at large about the credibility of the Malaysian Government and the present Judiciary-it’s the latter two that are on trial. Let the world see another SE Asian country falling behind as being a Police State and the erosion of democracy! This is what Zaid had to say see Below:- report abuse
