In 1984 or 1985, when I was an Asian Wall Street Journal correspondent in Malaysia, an acquaintance called me and said he had seen a US Army 2-1/2 ton truck, known as a "deuce-and-a-half," filled with US military personnel in jungle gear on a back road outside of Kuala Lumpur. Since Malaysia and the United States were hardly close friends at that point, I immediately went to the US Embassy in KL and asked what the US soldiers were doing there. I received blank stares. Similar requests to the Malaysian Ministry of Defense brought the same response. After a few days of chasing the story, I concluded that my acquaintance must have been seeing things and dropped it. It turns out he wasn’t seeing things after all. In a new book, "Malaysian Maverick: Mahathir Mohamad in Turbulent Times," launched Dec. 4 in Asia, former Asian Wall Street Journal editor Barry Wain solved the mystery. In 1984, during a visit to Washington DC in which Mahathir met President Ronald Reagan, Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger and others, he secretly launched an innocuous sounding Bilateral Training and Consultation Treaty, which Wain described as a series of working groups for exercises, intelligence sharing, logistical support and general security issues. In the meantime, Mahathir continued display a public antipathy on general principles at the Americans while his jungle was crawling with US troops quietly training for jungle warfare. That ability to work both sides of the street was a Mahathir characteristic. In his foreword, Wain, in what is hoped to be a definitive history of the former prime minister’s life and career, writes that "while [Mahathir] has been a public figure in Malaysia for half a century and well known abroad for almost as long, he has presented himself as a bundle of contradictions: a Malay champion who was the Malays’ fiercest critic and an ally of Chinese-Malaysian businessmen; a tireless campaigner against Western economic domination who assiduously courted American and European capitalists; a blunt, combative individual who extolled the virtues of consensual Asian values." Wain was granted access to the former premier for a series of exhaustive interviews. It may well be the most definitive picture painted of Mahathir to date, and certainly is even-handed. Wain, now a writer in residence at the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies in Singapore, is by no means a Mahathir sycophant. Advance publicity for the book has dwelt on an assertion by Wain that Mahathir may well have wasted or burned up as much as RM100 billion (US$40 billion at earlier exchange rates when the projects were active) on grandiose projects and the corruption that that the projects engendered as he sought to turn Malaysia into an industrialized state. Although some in Malaysia have said the figure is too high, it seems about accurate, considering such ill-advised projects as a national car, the Proton, which still continues to bleed money and cost vastly more in opportunity costs for Malaysian citizens forced to buy any other make at huge markups behind tariff walls. In addition, while Thailand in particular became a regional center for car manufacture and for spares, Malaysia, handicapped by its national car policy, was left out. Almost at the start of the book, Wain encapsulates the former premier so well that it bears repeating here: Mahathir, he writes, "had an all-consuming desire to turn Malaysia into a modern, industrialized nation commanding worldwide respect. Dr Mahathir’s decision to direct the ruling party into business in a major way while the government practiced affirmative action, changed the nature of the party and accelerated the spread of corruption. One manifestation was the eruption of successive financial scandals, massive by any standards, which nevertheless left Dr Mahathir unfazed and unapologetic." That pretty much was the story of Malaysia for the 22 years that Mahathir was in charge. There is no evidence that Mahathir himself was ever involved in corruption. Once, as Ferdinand Marcos was losing his grip on the Philippines, Mahathir pointed out to a group of reporters that he was conveyed around in a long black Daimler – the same model as the British ambassador used – that the Istana where he lived was a huge mansion, that he had everything he needed. Why, he asked, was there any need to take money from corruption? Nonetheless, in his drive to foster a Malay entrepreneurial class, he allowed those around him to pillage the national treasury almost at will, which carried over into Umno after he had left office and which blights the country to this day. Wain follows intricate trails through much of this, ranging from the attempt, okayed by Mahathir, to attempt to rescue Bumiputra Malaysia Finance in the early 1980s which turned into what at the time was the world’s biggest banking scandal. In the final analysis, much as Lee Kuan Yew down the road in Singapore strove to create a nation in his own image and largely succeeded, so did Mahathir. Both nations are flawed – Singapore in its mixture of technological and social prowess and draconian ruthlessness against an independent press or opposition, Malaysia with its iconic twin towers and its other attributes colored by a deepening culture of corruption that has continued well beyond his reign, which ended in 2003. Mahathir must bear the blame for much of this, in particular his destruction of an independent judiciary, as Wain writes, to further his aims. Mahathir, as the former premier said in the conversation over his mansion and his car, had everything including, one suspects, a fully-developed sense of injustice. He appears to this day to continue to resent much of the west, particularly the British. Wain writes exhaustively of Mahathir’s deep antagonism over both British elitism during the colonial days and the disdain of his fellow Malays (Mahathir’s parentage is partly Indian Muslim on his father’s side), especially the Malay royalty. That antagonism against the British has been a hallmark of his career – from the time he instituted the "Buy British Last" policy for the Malaysian government as prime minister to the present day. Robert Mugabe, in disgrace across much of the world for the way his policies have destroyed what was one of the richest countries in Africa, remains in Mahathir’s good graces. Asked recently why that was, an aide told me Mugabe had driven the British out of Zimbabwe and was continuing to drive out white farmers to this day, although he was replacing them with people who knew nothing of farming. That expropriation of vast tracts of white-owned land might have destroyed Zimbabwe’s agricultural production. But, the aide said, "He got the Brits out." For anybody wishing to understand Mahathir and the nation he transformed, Wain’s book is going to be a must – but bring spectacles. The tiny type and gray typeface make it a difficult read. And a disclaimer: Wain was once my boss. Comments

Kesal UM jadi lokasi aibkan Dr. Mahathir KUALA LUMPUR 29 Mei - Majlis Perundingan Melayu (MPM) kesal dengan tindakan pengurusan Universiti Malaya (UM) yang membenarkan kampus itu dijadikan lokasi penganjuran syarahan umum bagi mengaibkan bekas Perdana Menteri, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad. Setiausahanya. Hasan turut menggesa kerajaan supaya menyiasat niat sebenar Wain menulis buku mengenai Dr. Mahathir. ''Wain sendiri mengaku ketika syarahan bahawa jika dia menulis buku mengenai Lee Kuan Yew (Menteri Mentor Singapura) seperti yang dibuatnya terhadap Dr. Mahathir, dia sudah pasti ditangkap pihak berkuasa negara itu," ujarnya. Sementara itu, Ghauth yang dihubungi Mingguan Malaysia malam ini berkata, beliau perlu meneliti bantahan MPM itu terlebih sebelum memberikan komen lanjut. as u know, a former prime minister already aware of this and accept... Dr M wants ‘Malaysian Maverick’ released PETALING JAYA: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad wants the book Malaysian Maverick: Mahathir Mohamad In Turbulent Times to be released to bookstores following online reports that they have been held by the Customs Department. The former prime minister, who said he did not need any “protection”, said: “If the Government is withholding the book, I would request that the book be released forthwith.” The book, written by veteran Australian journalist Barry Wain, has been described as the first independent and full-length study of Dr Mahathir. Launched on Dec 4, it credits Dr Mahathir with Malaysia’s economic growth during his tenure as prime minister. However, the author also blames the former premier for losses of RM100bil during his 22 years in power. On Wednesday, DAP veteran leader Lim Kit Siang called on Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to set up a Royal Commission of Inquiry to investigate Dr Mahathir over allegations from the book. Dr Mahathir in his blog yesterday welcomed the suggestion. He said the commission should not be confined to one prime minister alone but should also look into Tun Abdullah Badawi’s years in charge. report abuse

Pls this article give to everyone read and thinks of, because Datuk Yip kum Fook never read article like this, how Einstein go to Buddhism, found of Buddhist with more detail. Einstein never attacked of Buddhist(Sanghas, dhamma and Buddha), He(Albert) respected of Buddhist because of Buddha Teachings, Datuk Yip and his teams attacked and insulted Buddhist monks, this make Buddhist shameful and lose of confident the others religions. Einstein on Buddhism Buddhism has the characteristics of what would be expected in a cosmic religion for the future: It transcends a personal God, avoids dogmas and theology; it covers both the natural and spritual; and it is based on a religious sense aspiring from the experience of all things, natural and spiritual, as a meaningful unity. -Albert Einstein If there is any religion that would cope with modern scientific needs it would be Buddhism. -Albert Einstein A human being is part of the whole, called by us ‘Universe’; a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest–a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and affection for a few persons nearest us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compasion to embrace all living creatures and the whole nature in its beauty. Nobody is able to achieve this completely but striving for such achievement is, in itself, a part of the liberation and a foundation for inner security. -Albert Einstein Here’s another quote from Einstein that I love. It is my signature at the bottom of my emails: The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead: his eyes are closed. -Albert Einstein report abuse

In Malaysia politics and money are intertwined like cancer that grows in the brain and then spreads to your liver and other parts of your body. Wain's book is not a revelation as all Malaysians already know that their government is corrupt including Mahathir and his predecessors. It will be impossible to rid corruption due to lack of political will, The will to eradicate corruption cannot come from corrupt politicians but from impartial bodies like the judiciary and police sadly these institutions are also corrupt as well. Lets turn to Allah if I may be allowed to use this term to clean up the country.

i am somewhat agreed with what "Rasicm is Human Nature" comment above. Everythings he/ she wrote there is the same feeling i had. trust me , all the complainant here is doing nothing for their life. we had chances and been offering the chances to upgrade ourselves. but yet, we choose to face the computers, reading what ever negative about the country, and spent most of the times giving comments. use that time u spent to upgrade urself rather than complaining here and there. for me, Malaysia still the best country to lived in. i'm no UMNO member or government servant. But i had, the day i graduating from universities, effortlessly upgrade myself. and i am where i am rite now. it had nothin to do with "guna kabel" (words malaysian used for "networking") or anything related to UMNO or Kerajaan assistance. the only thing i seek from Kerajaan or UMNO/ BN (who ruled the country) is to keep good country development progress and safety. thats all. report abuse

I challenge the Malaysian government to prove the NEP or wahtever name they call it defend that it is affirmative action. It is NOT. IT IS RACIAL DISCRIMINATION. If it is affirmative action, then I say-sign on to the Treaty-Eliminating Racial Discrimination-which Malaysia refuses to do OR Have a RACE RELATIONS ACT!

If this happens , then lawyers can challenge the fact that Tun Daim and Mahathir have got discounted Bumi shares as Millionaires and therefore its not helping the poor but supports the rich! The Policeman who earn $700 also has the same benefit as Najib Tun Razak. This is racial discrimination. Superscale Civil Servants are getting overseas scholarships for their children, but Mohamed in the kampong can go to the 3rd Rated University-University Malaya. This Bumiputra Device is cheating people and is RACISM. It must go! The USA must never have a FREE TRADE AGREEMENT with Malaysia because they will then SUPPORT RACISM! report abuse

I am glad that the book sets out what Malaysian all know.Malaysians unlike the rest of the world rarely write books so that the government normally chnages history. Most histtory books are from the West about Malaysia-the rubbish sold at UMNO meetings can be used as TOILET PAPER-sub standard rubbish! I like Malaysians to write more-there are a few other books coming out in the West about UMNO-the Racist Party in the 21st Century equating to the South Africanaar Party and National Front in the UK ( a Racist Party).

I would suggest that Malaysian continue to blog all over the world with the main intention to demonazing the Devil UMNO-Mahathir, Badawi and Najib who falsely continue to perjure against Anwar Ibrahim. A country that cheats Non_Malays and Malays is dangerous and must be democratically removed. No violence should take place but peaceful protests and when in power seek prosecution from all members of UMNO.This evil must be defeated.I am happy that this book is out. This is the UMNO and Mahathir's Legacy before he dies-he ruined Malaysia! report abuse

Dr Mamak is the master of deceit and hypocrisy. Under his rule, he turned the Malays into money grabbing, deceitful politicians, incompetent administrators and utterly illogical humans. There is nothing logical, rational or equitable in the government's policies. Everything is tailored for the benefit of the Malays. The non malays do not exist in their planning. He used the NEP as a comouflage to enrich his cronies and his children. And to think that Malays can be conned by an Indian - which he is. The Malays have rotted to the core - and he himself says so. Like LKY in Singapore he pretends to be the saviour of Malaysia when he is actually the cause of it's deterioration. Probably that's why both dislike each other - they see the likeness when they face each other. One Ying and the other Yang. No difference. Both are equally objectionable and both are anachronistic. Dr M, why don't you just disappear! Malaysia has been mortally damaged by you and your cronies. Just go and spend the rest of days in your ranch.

The part about American troops in Malaysia hardly surprised me. In many cases, governments that have publically appeared to be unfriendly to the US have had secret relationships for practical reasons. Politicians being what they are, they can be hypocritical (and Mahathir certain was) and use an anti-American platform to further their agenda but accept that they do need to also be friendly without the citizens knowing. And the US, on its part, probably understands the same too, accepting the bashing in public but being able to still communicate privately. On the presence of US troops, I too saw them once at an airport in Johor. I sat next to two soldiers in uniform at the arrival hall and wondering why US Army personnel were there, I asked them where they were headed and they told me they were on their way to the Malaysian Army Jungle Warfare school in the state, supposedly one of the best in the region. I thought they might be there to train but not sure in what role, though it hardly surprised me that they were around. On another occasion, a friend in the Malaysian airforce told me that he (a loadmaster) had been doing LAPES runs in the northern state of Kedah with USAF crews. That too didn't surprise me, nor did the fact that the Airod company in Malaysia services USAF aircraft in the Asia-Pacific region. I have even seen an AWACs aircraft at the Subang airport once. report abuse

As a Malaysian citizen living overseas I am afraid of the government that Mahathir set up and till today continues to run through proxies. Whilst Tengku Abdual Rahman is the father of Malaysian Independence, Mahathir is the Father of Malaysian CORRUPTION. Like his Cronies-Badawi and Najib now even the present Lord President who we depend on the Rule of Law-married illegally as decided by the Shariah court a girl who could be his daughter. Appointments in Malaysia require that you have a bad past, so that Mahathir can hold you by your Juggernaughts! This is a Bad Man and Malaysia is getting worse being run by his lackeys! I am afraid that I may be arrested when and if I go back to Malaysia.I Think Najib by asking Malaysians to come back may use the ISA and arrest right thinking, Patriotic Malaysians.
