A cross-border meeting between Thai and Malaysian leaders

The December 9 meeting of Thai and Malaysian prime ministers in the troubled southern Thailand province of Narathiwat looks on the face of it like one filled with symbolic meaning. It contained a degree of risk for both Abhisit Vejjajiva and Najib Razak. But it could also been seen as gesture politics on both sides which will do nothing to further the cause of peace in the three Muslim-Malay majority provinces, Yala, Narathiwat and Pattani.

For Thailand's Abhisit it provided a means of showing that he was at least trying to make progress on the issue, in contrast not only to the disastrous southern policy pursued by Thaksin Shinawatra. A meeting with Najib in the south also gives the impression that Malaysia is in earnest about not allowing Pattani separatist sympathizers on the Malaysian side aiding the bomb planters and slogan painters in the three southern provinces. It may also be aimed to please the southern voters who mostly support Abhsit's Democrat Party. He called for a political solution while rejecting dialogue with the rebels.

As for Najib, it gave him a chance to look statesmanlike, deliver a message to PAS-run Kelantan not tolerate cross-border trouble makers and reaffirm Malaysia's acceptance of Thai sovereignty over a region which has wanted to be joined to (then British-ruled Malaya) for a century100. That would play well with non-Malays and underline UMNO's self-image as a moderate, responsible force for domestic progress and regional cooperation. But at the same time Najib could make it clear to Abhisit that without more serious political effort on the Thai side, the problem would at best fester and could get worse. To some Malays at least it would seem that Najib is showing some concern for cousins across the border.

Perhaps not coincidentally the International Crisis Group came out on December 8 with a report criticizing the Thais for lack of any initiatives to address the discontents of the Malay-Muslim majority in the provinces. It noted that government in the region was more in the hands of the military than the civil administration and the army had resisted attempts by Abhisit's government to reduce its role.

The fact is however that much as Abhisit may personally favor attempts to reach out and engage the rebels – whoever their leaders may be – his government is too weak and itself too reliant on military backing to do so, or even to propose any real political steps to accommodate the aspirations of the majority in the provinces.

The military anyway believes that its efforts since Thaksin's overthrow have improved the security situation. For them tough security measures plus some more cooperation from Malaysia, not political compromises, are the answer.

The Crisis Group report acknowledges that "military sweeps" since 2007 had curtailed violence but also claims that the insurgency has "proved resistant to military suppression". It even says that a huge development budget which is supposed to help tackle the problem may have made things worse by engendering corruption while providing an excuse for avoiding addressing the political issues.

It urges an end to martial law in the area, disbandment of Buddhist "self-defense" groups, better control of weapons held by "self-defense civilians" and investigation of past abuses against Malay-Muslims.

Although acceptance of some measure of autonomy, like Aceh, or even Malaysia's Sabah and Sarawak, may seem to non-Thais an obvious potential solution, it remains anathema to much of the Thai military and senior bureaucracy for whom there can be no retreat from the notion of a centralized, monarchist and predominantly Buddhist-guided state.

In any event, though a running sore, the situation in the south is a minor, if embarrassing, issue for a Bangkok focused on red/yellow shirt divides and the monarch-succession watch. So whether empty gesture or serious attempt to push for peace, the Najib-Abhisit meeting seems unlikely to lead to substantive progress.

Sanctuary

The Separatists can find sanctuary just across the river after their bombing spree. Wonder why the Thai would think the neighbour is of any help to solve the problem.

Don't Trust Racist UMNO Malays
written by Anti Bumiputraism, December 12, 2009
Malaysia is an Islamo-fascist, racist, despotic, feudalistic, corrupt, lazy & incompetent nation. It deliberately & generously gives out Malaysian citizenships to Thai Muslim terrorists in the name of Malay fraternity so that they can just slip across the border to evade capture after each bombing run on the Thai side. This appears all the more sinister & evil bearing in mind there are thousands of even 2nd & 3rd generation local-born Malaysian Chinese & Indians queuing for years for their much deserved citizenships but are inhumanely denied their rights due to some lame pretexts of some technical errors in their birth certificates entirely not of their own making.

Due to little internation condemnation & exposure, these racist UMNO Malays have gone even further in embarking on an even more bold but sinister/evil project in trying to artificially inflate the Malay demography to overwhelm the significant Chinese & Indian minorities by liberally & generously importing fellow Muslim Indonesians, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis, Myanmarese, Cambodians, Arabs etc in its scheme to exact a 'final solution' to its not so obedient Chinese & Indian minorities. It is therefore little wonder that, though they would not dare to spell it out loudly, most minority races in the northern Peninsula bordering Thailand would rather wish that they be ruled by Thailand than UMNO Malays while those in the south would rather that they be incorporated into Singapore.

Given this obnoxious background, Thailand is well advised not to trust the sincerity of its Malaysian counterpart. but must insist that Malaysia not grant dual nationality status to Thai Malays. Thailand must also ponder seriously the proposed granting of autonomy to Southern Thailand as Sharia never respects, let alone recognises, the legal rights of infidels & thus amounting to gross violiation of the human rights of non Muslims. Thailand needs to listen to the voices of material victims already suffering inside an increasing fundamentalistic Malaysia.

When the PM is a Suspectyed Murderer and the DPM supports Racism-and both work for Mahathir-Be warned!
written by Najibs Wife, December 13, 2009
The present Malaysian Government with the Mahathir Doctrine will continue to use Islamic Fundementalism to stay in power. The means would be to create a situation that they can utilize the ISA ( -more stringent then the retiring Patriotic Act) to stifle opposition.

Democracy will be rollbacked on the grounds that Najib Tun Razak, under directions of the Anti-Sematic, Racist, Pakistan Devil from Kerala India -Mahathir Mohamed to trigger problems in Kelantan with a view to justifying arreast without trial. Najib is a crook anda known attempt murderer-one should see what his exwife affirmed on affidavits at the High Court of Malaya!

Retracing to the history
written by Thanawat Pimoljinda, December 14, 2009
The southern insurgent movements involve longstanding sensitive issues that affect national stability. This is because it is not only related to social security in the south, but is also related to questions of territorial unity and the sovereign entity. This might be presented though a study of identity politics in southern Thailand, in which nationalist positions are dominated by Thai Buddhist as well as Malay Muslim discourse, thereby showing how marginalized are those locals who advocate exchange and solidarity. After all, it seems that the nature of insurgent movements entails that they develop from the calls of indigenous insurgents for social justice and the maintenance of their own ethnic identity and thence to external linkage with international terrorist groups in the course of struggling for self-determination and constructing their own nation-state.

Even though the Thai governments made various attempts at developing tactics which would ultimately quell the violence, none were effective. Instead, the violence seems only to have intensified in view of an increased number of incidents and casualties. At the same time, even though accusations against the Malaysian government for supporting the insurgency have ever been made from some government officials, it seems the accusations are false if one takes into account the increase in trade and investment in recent years.

Preserve Pathet Thai
written by Darah Keling Asal, December 14, 2009
Thank you for the article, not so much for what it contained, but for the responses it generated. I have to agree with the commentators - do not trust the Malays. Remember, it was Najib's father, Abdul Razak, who first provided aid and succour to the PULO. As it was Abdul Razak's man in Sabah, Tun Mustapha, who basically initiated the bloodbath that is the Southern Philippines today. The Malaysian government (read: The Malays) have since the inception of the myth of Malaya/Malaysia, been instigating terrorism across three of their nation's borders - in Mindanao, Southern Thailand, and Indonesia. Jemaah Islamiah was formed under the patronage of Mahathir, with the five runaways from Indonesia's security forces given instant permanent residence in Malaysia. The result is sadly still with us today.

To the Thais, please be warned: when you dance with the Devil, it will be you who trips up.

How can Thailand remain Pathet Thai, the Land of the Free, when you seek to deal with a people whose identity is based on a bald lie. There is no such thing as a Malay race, nor is there such a thing as a Malay culture. These are the creation of British politicians and civil servants to justify control of what was the richest revenue earner for the Empire. This lie has been perpetrated to such an extent, that it is now 'God's Truth'. A handy tool to suppress, demonise, and extort the proudly non-Malay.

What the Thai military should do, IMHO, is take a page from the Colonialist's book and cordon off the Malays in 'new villages', and the terrorists and their families in concentration camps. Do that and take a well earned rest.

Alternatively, conduct an exchange programme - your Malays for Malaysia's 'foreigners, immigrants and infidels'. We would be grateful. And we would prove to be His Serene Majesty's most loyal subjects.

Deceitful UMNO
written by kanchil, December 15, 2009
The border trouble is Malaysia's(UMNO) making. It is designed to divert attention from an imploding government headed by UMNO. It has been revealed that a bomb making factory has been "discovered" in the neighbouring state of Kelantan. Everyone along the border knows that UMNO is behind all this islamic extremism. This is the "blood transfusion" that UMNO has always needed to fend off it's anaemic policies which are coming to a head - and which it cannot win. Who will support Malaysia in the international arena? It's the islamic extremists who will come to their aid - those from the border areas with Thailand and Phillipines. Thailand should put all of them behind barbed wire - give them a taste of what they did to the Chinese in Malaysia. Malaysia is a country that is quickly rotting in the core. Maybe if Thailand waits long enough UMNO will just collapse.
