Malaysia's Royal Palace
Police hunt for bloggers and others who abuse the late Johor sultan's memory

At least one blogger has been arrested and at least 25 police reports have been filed across Malaysia over online postings insulting Sultan Mahmud Iskandar Almarhum Sultan Ismail, who died Sunday at the age of 77, according to local media.

That included a 29-year-old who blogged under the name ‘Aduka Taruna' and who was arrested in Kelantan and hauled to Kuala Lumpur for investigation. He later apologized and the blog has been deleted. Police are searching for a second anonymous blogger who posted a video clip of the sultan in which the blogger deleted the former king's words and substituted his own. A task force has been established to seek to trace insults to the dead sultan, The Star reported.

In earlier years, Iskandar reportedly killed two people, including a golf caddy whose head he bashed in with a golf club, and then maimed the caddy's brother. He was also reportedly responsible for wide range of other public outrages. See our story, Perception and Royal Reality in Malaysia.

Johor Police Deputy Commissioner Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff vowed that the police would "find those responsible and bring them to the court of law." In past months, police have threatened to use sedition charges against many who have criticized the royalty. The threat apparently has deterred a wide number of bloggers and other news outlets that usually pick up Asia Sentinel stories from using the Jan. 25 story on the sultan's death.

Information, Communication and Culture Minister Rais Yatim found it necessary to seek to quell the outpouring of scorn for the Johor royal family, saying it was against Asian lifestyle, laws and the 1Malaysia concept, which Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak is promoting to attempt to reduce racial tension, according to The Star.

"We have things to do. Nothing can be gained from running down someone who just died," he told local media "Very seldom do we find Asians lambasting a former head of state, especially the late Sultan of Johor who was once the Yang di-Pertuan Agong," or Malaysian king. Under Malaysia's Constitution, the country's nine sultans rotate the kingship between them every five years. Iskandar was named Agong in 1984 and relinquished the crown in 1989.

The sultan's death – and the coronation of his son, appears to have set of an extraordinary outpouring of relief that Iskandar has passed from the scene, and raised concerns about the conduct of his son, Ibrahim Ismail Almarhum Sultan Iskandar, 51, on allegations that he had beaten people in nightclubs and committed other offences including shooting a man in a nightclub after an argument during the 1980s. The charge was dismissed because of the then-prince's immunity. Ibrahim was also involved in two other separate assault cases. In another 2005 case, a young woman reportedly was assaulted by Ibrahim after he accused her of two-timing him.

Nonetheless, The Star quoted associates of the newly crowned sultan as saying he is "regarded as a caring person who will ensure no one is left out in the development of the state."

In response to the Jan. 25 article in Asia Sentinel regarding the late sultan's behavior, letter-writers said they had been forced to duck-walk in nightclubs by members of the Johor royal family, that they lived in fear of being on the Johor roads with any of the sultan's family, that hotels cleared their cocktail lounges of waitresses when the sultan or his brood came in for fear that bodyguards would kidnap them and drag them out.

Despite the behavior of the Johor family and other sultans as well, the local media continue to ignore almost all of the allegations. That is partly because the United Malays National Organisation, seeking to keep the loyalty of ethnic Malays, has made criticism of the royalty an issue with which to bludgeon the opposition whenever possible. In particular, the opposition Pakatan Rakyat coalition criticized a decision last year by the Sultan of Perak to dismiss the opposition government in the state and instead appoint an UMNO chief minister. The case is still on appeal in Malaysian courts. However, UMNO members have filed hundreds of police complaints against Karpal Singh, the Democratic Action Party's senior leader and a lawyer who took the case to court, and others.

That is a far cry from February 1993, in the wake of beatings of sports figures by Iskandar and Ibrahim, when former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad led a charge to revoke royal immunity from arrest and prosecution, delivering a fire-breathing speech in the Dewan Rakyat, or Parliament, that accused the royals of selling out the country to the British and quoted Tunku Abdul Rahman, the country's first prime minister, as saying the royals could even get away with murder if they wished although he did not name Iskandar.

Mahathir's speech can be found here: Criticizing Malaysia's Royals

"In this situation," Mahathir said, "the Rajas not only continue their habits that the People dislike and are uneasy with but also matters that are hated by the People. If this trend is not stopped, the feelings of the People towards the Raja will boil over and become so bad that at a point of time in the future, the People may no longer be able to control their feelings."

Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia – which admittedly occasionally contains erroneous information – details a long list of offences by the recently crowned Johor Sultan, including that he had run up RM26,700 worth of traffic tickets before public embarrassment forced him to pay them. The entry can be found here: Ibrahim Ismail of Johor

No one should be above the Law Of the Land
written by shiokguy , April 18, 2010
But then again what law do we have when those enforcing it is questionable?

The law and others have been used/abused for their own agenda. The only way out is change of Scene/Government.

You might said.. What if the change of government does not make any different? Or worst, the new government is worst?

I will said "I am willing to bet on it, and we will vote them out again in 5 years"

the malay sultans still think they live in the middle ages when they could be absolute monarchs. they would do well to study history . there is no divine right to rule and rulers are tolerated only if they benefit the people by their existence. if this social contract is broken, sooner or later they would be got rid of!
the present regime cannot last forever...nothing is forever!

The people are TIRED Of the Sultans
written by Manyak Takut , February 17, 2010
The people of Malaysia are tired of their self proclaimed Sultans. They are above the law, the fight among themselves like gangsters, they kill their golf caddies and they gamble away the peoples fortune at foreign Casinos. Need i say more? Are any of these lies? No, these are known facts. So what else can these Sultans do to stay in power? Oppress the people and silence their discontent. Nothing new. Sultans been doing that for eons.

Oh Brittinia Please Come back again!
written by KUNTAKINTA , January 30, 2010
Its res ipsa locquiter, speaks for itself. If Malaysia is a democracy-Free speech will be protected under the Constitution. Its obvious malaysia is not a democracy. Most malaysians prefer the British to come back and rule the country-Malaysians are tired of Mulsims who are of Indian,Arab, Bosnian, Bangladeshi, Pakistani etc etc running Malaysia.

It wonderfull to see how a written constitution and unwritten work as we speak. In the USA-The President need not be examined personally in Congress as you would as the Bristhish Pm at questin time and other.Today, I see Obama going to the Republican camp and opening himself up to questions about his policies. Not required. In the UK, London, Blair or BLAIR is answering questions like an ordinary witness to Baroness Usha and others!

Will this happen in Malaysia? That is why Bloggers are important. Why is the Government supporting a murderer...I am not talking about Najib but the Sultan of Johor. he is probably being RAPED by 20 TURKISH HOMOSEXUELS in hell!

The legacy of Mahathir Mohamed when he dies is that he developed CORRUPTION as a device to saty in power in Malaysia. We should give him a PJK for that. In Malaysia, you cant talk about something that is wrong -you will be arrested!

We must agree with HH Raja Akbar Ismail: He is absolutely right! In Malaysia-murder is OK if the suspect is Royalty or a Politician-like James Bond 007-Lincense to kill....wait till you die-on your death bed, you will cry and beg the Lord.

We cannot forgive Najib if he was corrupt or complicit in a murder-there is no evidence. Ofcourse he has the power to supress evidence as PM. But you reap what you sow-you will die by the very sword-we all know that.We also dont want to Judge.

But surely to arrest the people who blog against a the crime of MURDER is strange. Why does a lawyer Hishamuddin arrest a blogger who is against crime??? STRANGE. I would very much like that the Shariah Court arrest Hishamuddin Tun Huseein Onn for drinking Anchor Beer with his wife-see the PHOTOGRAPHS internationally- maybe cane the BASTARD!

My dear Home Malaysia ( A Lament No 1)
written by Private Eye , January 30, 2010
The Asian Sentinel promotes democracy-it gives citizens the opportunity to participate in the affairs of their government(s).I applaud Asia Sentinel like many millions who read this paper. Policy makers should remember this when it comes to funding. This is a legitimate expectation that when governments do not give their citizens the basic human right to be heard, a free and fair press will. I welcome the 21st century! Media is the watchdog for human rights abuse.

I was born in Malaysia, in particular Kedah-Jitra. Now I live in the United States. I miss Malaysia but I realize that the world is your home and Malaysia is no longer what it used to be. Change is inevitable –a now well educated Malaysian population can accept changes but cannot see changes that favor a selected few. Charitable and God fearing Malaysians can no longer accept policies that help the elite to the DETRIMENT of the needy. Toyo’s children don’t need a scholarship-he accumulated wealth though corruption as the Chief Minister of Selangor.

Malaysians should speak up and change the government. Malaysian government policies segregate Malaysians-its wrong! In the USA, Obama has lost three (3) seats because people are not happy with his policies. Malaysian should remove Barisan. I think 50 plus years is enough. One of the reasons for the removal is dishonesty.

Malaysians of every religion cannot accept the dishonesty of the politicians who are bent in only enriching themselves and their cronies. This nightmare must end. Malaysian wants a choice based on merit. Malaysians in short, were never happy when Tun Daim (then Minister of Finance) gave himself licenses-just the same as Rafidah Aziz and Nazri and accumulated wealth. There was no investigation all done with impunity, Laws that the British needed to suppress the Communist insurgency is being forcefully applied to the very citizens and their kin who celebrated independence. Arresting criminals without a trail is not only barbaric but primitive! Sad that the Minister of Home affairs is the son and grandson of founding fathers in Malaysia who believed in a unified Malaysia-Hussein Onn and Hishamuddin Hussein Onn, does not believe in the Malaysian Court system. I don’t blame him for other reasons know to all and sundry in Malaysia. The Malaysian Courts are a shameful lot who are biased and have a history of corrupted leadership. Malaysia is a failed state and its citizens need protection. In the 21st century, these are the new problems that the United Nations need to address –no longer can a country say that a 3rd party cannot intervene in its sovereignty. We face a global problem, international problem like insane, fundamental illumination –this is no longer a domestic problem. Too many Muslims died in 9/11 in New York all in the name of Allah! Something is wrong with the Muslim religion. Tengku Abdul Rahman would agree with me-Not Mahathir or his lackeys-Badawi or Najib. The latter need to fuel fundamentalism to keep UMNO in power at whatever costs. Gone are the days of the beloved Tengku Abdul Rahman, or the Mokhtar Dhari, Soh Chin Aun or Mani Jegathesan. It’s no longer a good country anymore-not because of the politics of race, the policy of positive segregation and corruption that has torn Malaysian apart. The opportunity to serve the people is GIVEN to people who won’t serve the people, but the party that gives them the opportunity to be in public office. That has been going on for (5) five decades. Even the royalty have to “kow tow” to survive, forgetting their duties under the constitution to lead Malaysians of all races. They are involved in business to survive. Sad that Azlan Shah sold his values and principles for supporting a bad government in the Perak State assembly for Gamuda to gain (very sad). I thought he would on his death, left a great legacy- but “the good will be interred with the dead-bad will live on”. What a legacy to leave after so many years of fair-mindedness on the bench.

My Dear HOME-Malaysia ( A Lament No 2)
written by Private Eye , January 30, 2010

Everything that used to protect race relations is now gone-the order of the day is to use race and religion to divide and rule. Strangely we accused the British of this. I remember when I was a student (18 years old) and was stranded in Terengganu with no money or accommodation. A Malay gentleman took me into his home and his wife fed me with what that family had. It was rice and the best ikan bilis sambal-that New York can’t produce! I was and am a Christian, non-Malay. Today. Even the Malay is a different person altogether. We don’t know who he is? He is no longer Ahmad or Ibrahim-he is called Toyo or something else. I have no objections to immigrants-I cant, I now live in the greatest country in the world that welcomes legal immigrants. That includes refugees and asylum seekers. But when a country selects an immigrant who is of a particular religion to dilute the country for political purposes that is a bad country. Many Indians have waited and still waiting for 20 over years for citizenship. Malaysian wants accountability from their government. Looking at how two different systems work should educate Malaysians. I am sure that a taxi driver would like to have asked Nazri-why I can’t get a taxi licences and you have 200? I would like to ask Mahathir Mohd, why did you list Hospitals on the stock exchange when they are an essential service to Malaysians and down grade our University Hospital. Why did your son buy these Hospital/Hotels and make blood money from Malaysians. Why did you move the courts so far that it’s expensive to get justice??? Tell me? Justice for the poor is gone-Thanks to bad UMNO policies.
AMAZING: Obama went to the Republican camp, Washington DC to explain his policies and subjected himself to examination, just as Tony Blair did in the Iraq Inquiry in London. I am mesmerized that citizens and peers demanded accountability. For Malaysians - That is a democracy. Can Malaysia achieve this? I am optimistic-I believe that water will find its level-impunity won’t continue-the bad will fail and truth will prevail for all the wonderful Muslims, Christians, Buddhists, and Hindus inter alia living in Malaysia. Vote the opposition for change even if you don’t like them-its democracy stupid! I will keep living in the US and hoping for change in Malaysia. Maybe as an Indian bugger I may be President of the USA as I can’t be Prime Minister of Malaysia.

Malays and Chinese must learn from the Indians. Indians gave up a long time ago that MIC will look after Indian interests. Similarly UMNO and MCA will never look after Malay and Chinese interests-they will look after their own interests through collusion and nepotism. I see as an Indian Christian, a Malay or Chinese leader looking after the interest of my family, community and myself. That is my dream, that a Muslim, Buddhist or Hindu will stand up for me and my rights! Razak, Najib should think like that!

government by the stupid
written by sapu , January 28, 2010
Malaysian MPs vote without thinking. Everything Mr M says will be supported - no matter what it is. So they condemned the sultans when Dr M tells them to do so. But they cannot accept that others can then also critisize the royalty too. Anyway, the successor Ibrahim is another one that does not have the love of Johoreans. There is too much dirt on him. It is amazing that a modern Muslim society in malaysia can spawn this kind of people. The only way to put them in their proper place is to be able to critisize them in public. At one time Sultan Iskandar ordered all his sons to be confined to the palace - there was too much flak from "incidents" involving this sons. As for ordinary people, they will do what they have always done - avoid the royalty. It is safer and ultimately happier for you.
