Former Malaysian Prime Minister’s quest to oust Abdullah Ahmad Badawi stumbles as he’s hospitalized

It’s unclear today just how sick former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad is after having been hospitalized Monday with what were described as breathing difficulties. But as much as anything, the 81-year-old former premier’s hospitalization has put on hold an increasingly frenetic schedule of bombarding his successor’s government with accusations of avarice, incompetence and treachery

Mahathir was first hospitalized on the island of Langkawi, where he spends much of his time to rest and relax.  After the ailing former strongman was transferred to the National Heart Institute in Kuala Lumpur, his daughter, Marina Mahathir, told Asia Sentinel he was “much better” and an aide described his mood as “cheerful. Hospital officials said he could be discharged in a few days.

Mahathir had been on a whirlwind tour trying to influence United Malays National Organisation divisions and constituencies in a probably vain but certainly entertaining attempt to regain some of the clout he lost when he gave up the premiership in 2003, after 22 years in power. Over the weekend, just before his hospitalization, he attended an old boys’ gathering of the Class of ‘47, King Edward College of Medicine, Singapore in Bukit Merah, in the state of Perak. He also delivered a keynote address for an UMNO Youth event in Perak, with the packed hall cheering as he attempted to speak. Spectators egged him on as so-called “soft” campaigning intensifies for impending general elections expected in the near future.  However, other than Perak, he has largely been frozen out of UMNO politics and has been reduced to jousting from the outside since August 2006, when he complained that party leaders had issued a gag order to keep him from talking to party branches and individual units.

Recent by-elections in the Ijok and Machap districts were hard fought by the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition against the opposition Keadilan party, headed by Anwar Ibrahim, Mahathir’s former deputy premier, whom Mahathir jailed on charges of sexual abuse and corruption that many observers thought were trumped up. The Barisan prevailed in both by-elections, although in the face of widespread allegations of vote-buying and other irregularities.

However, there were gains by the opposition Democratic Action Party (DAP) among Chinese voters in what political analysts describe as discontent over the pro-Bumiputera, or native Malay, affirmative action policy and the state of the economy.

Mahathir had urged voters to deliver a message to what he called the “rotten government” in the by-election, surprising many observers who perceived his words to be a call for voters to back the opposition.  It wasn’t. Despite his beating up on the Barisan, he has said he would not support the opposition, because he does not want to be regarded as a traitor to UMNO.

On Sunday, the local tabloid The Star, controlled by the Malaysian Chinese Association, the ethnic Chinese party in the ruling coalition, carried a piece depicting Mahathir as possibly aiding the opposition. Mahathir denied the allegation and defended his right to speak out. Supporters say that this is just an attempt to label Mahathir as the enemy and isolate him from grassroots UMNO members.

Mahathir’s punishing schedule has been a cause of concern for his family, but the former premier didn’t let up until he was carted off to the hospital. This is perhaps his last hurrah, a final chance, as he sees it, to set things right and deliver a blow to the ruling coalition’s confidence in Abdullah Badawi.

It may be a Quixotic effort, as his influence seems inevitably to be waning along with his health. He was bitterly disappointed during the UMNO general assembly in October 2006, when he lost a divisional election and was denied the chance to address delegates in his quest to oust his successor.

Mahathir suffered a mild stroke in November last year, caused by a clot that restricted blood flow in one of his arteries, but subsequently recovered fully. He also suffered a heart attack in 1989 and underwent bypass surgery. Supporters flocked to the hospital hoping to get news on his condition and to see him, however doctors have advised that he rest and only close relatives are permitted to enter his ward.

Mahathir’s hospitalization was an added shock as it happened just a day after Internet rumors reported that Abdullah Badawi himself had collapsed. The Prime Minster denied the report and attributed his unsteadiness at a ceremony in Perak to heat exhaustion and lack of sleep the night before. His physicians say Abdullah Badawi is in good health.

We need to re-engineer ourselves with good universal values
written by Property Malaysia , February 14, 2009
Agree. We have heard once there are popular books and business seminars that touch on re-engineering our corporate and workforce. Ultimately, the message should be re-engineering ourselves with good universal values. Then only we have hope in our next generation of leaders.
The world also seriously needs to re-engineer itself with leaders leading the pack with peace values.

No leader is perfect...
written by Best Online Classifieds , February 14, 2009
No leader is perfect... thats why there is a need for opposition parties. The challenge has always been finding true leaders with universal peace values. Such leader has integrity, humility and truly serve the society regardless of their skin colors. Living for greater (higher) good has always been the motto or slogan in schools/clubs, etc. Such motto should carry on till we go to the tomb. We need to have check-and-balance system and remind ourselves that we are here to serve. Mark our words. Gone would be the days where people enter into the fields of politics for monetary (and other selfish) gains. It simply would not work! You cannot continue to fool people continually. Wake up. think global. Find a moral compass to lead yourself and your people, without fear or favour. Love all and serve all without prejudice. Be an unselfish person. The whole universe right down to atom, follows the principle of give and take and living for greater good of all.

Mahathir
written by Tejo , September 30, 2008
Mahathir's policies might have been appreciated during his time. But, not now. They are no more relevant now. So, Tun, dont worry about them too much. Take good rest. Towards the end, everything has to take rest. This is the time to remain in communion with God.
Many years ago, I brought my two children to the beach. They spent the whole afternoon playing in the sand building castles till late afternoon. They have to leave everything behind for its times up to go back. Our life is like that. When time comes we have to leave everything behind. Thats wisdom.

He has plundered the country's wealth enough and should not die a hated man ...but it seems he could not shut his stinking mouth!

written by Dean , April 18, 2008
Going thro' the years of growing up in the 80's and maturing in the 90's were certainly the best years of my life, but sadly the new millennium doesn't holds true any longer. A good leader is someone you either love or hate just like the Great prophet, no one is perfect. Well at least for a while we were proud "MALAYSIAN".

what the hell are you guys talking about. sure,, we are allowed to prosper along with our brothers and sisters from the privilaged race. note the key word- ALLOWED-
i recently attended a course that's mandatory for all government staff-biro tatatertib negara-throughout this course we are taught about the history of malaysia and all the relevant statistics of the country, education, income, employment and so on. at the end of this course, there's a mcq based test that one has to pass to get the certificate stating you have successfully completed the course. 1 of the question in the test was- 1) chinese and indians must respect the malays because a- malays are kind b- malays are smart c-malays allowed the other races to get natinonality status. please choose the correct answer!!!there was another question which was so blatantly abusive and insulting to the minority races that i don't which to mention.WHAT??? did't all the race fight for independance. If i remember the concoted history taught in our schools well, the british vehemently refused to grant us independance unless all the races in the counntry united and presented as one. they thought it was not possible.we proved them wrong then for our unified efforts to have a country to call home.aren't the indians and chinese doing their part for the country?? where does all the incentives being paid for the malays come from???in part i am sure its from the sweat and blood of the nons as well. why are we not given special status?? because we were never the original inhabitants of this country? we were merely brought here as slaves and traders?? i dare say the original inhabitants of this country are the orang asli,,even their rights are not that well protected..can u name me 100 orang asli who are living in the cities and driving mercedes or BMWs?? i can name u 100000 malays who are. what i would like to see is all the chinese and indians leaving this country to start a life in another country.,,let us be refugees in another country than being one in ours. lets us all go where our efforts are appeciated. enough is enough..please vote in this general election after considering all the facts...

What you did is wrong , within urself and in the eyes of GOD
written by Balasingam , February 08, 2008
No doubt you brought Malaysia to the world, but what you did within the country is wrong, absolutely wrong. You manupulated everything for the benefit of one race....Bumiputera.You denied the rights of the 2 races in every field, education, business... name it...Politicians make a hell out of everything for their family and their cronies, what abt the layman???? I have 5 kids all got Straight A's in their SPM exam, but were denied a scholarship to study overseas in the field of medicine, but the rich ones gets the scholarship even with B's and C's . How do you expect us to be loyal to your unethical goverment. All this while i have voted for the Barisan National under the disguise of giving equal rights for all races..... but always remember this... said by confucious" He WHO KNOWS AND KNOWS HE KNOWS,HE IS A WISE MAN, ALWAYS SEEK HIM".You are realising it after stepping down. Its too late DR.May God Bless You, coz what you setup can never be reversed due to the enjoying group is still around and never think for the public..But I pray for your good health.Every man will have his day.

Being Discriminated
written by Jill , November 30, 2007
I was 10years old when my best friend a malay attended 30mins Kelas Agama Islam(Islamic Education Class) and I attend Moral Class. When he returned after 30mins, he call me 'KAFIR'(ENEMY OF ISLAM IN ARABIC LANGUAGE). I don't know that time what it mean but I keep on smiling. But later when I enter into my secondary school I understand it's meaning. Since then both of have are no longer close enough. Eachtime we meet we have problem trusting each another. When I enter USM in 1997, during the orientation week, 1st year malay, indian and chinese students were segregrated to 3 different hall. I found out that all 3 races are talking bad about each another. I have highlighted this problem to the VC saying that racist in Malaysia are like a time bomb just need someone to trigger it. Racisim in Malaysia was freely thaught in school, discuss among friends and talk in temples/mosque/churches etc. Malaysia in a very serious problem but I think it's already too late to gets thing right. Our BN goverments are corrupted and if you ask me, I think Goverment are racist by diving the socio-economy of three races in Malaysia. We need a leader and party that can re-unite this 3 races and not dividing it. I think MIC and MCA are just a UMNO's 'prostitutes'. I'm very worry about the future of my kids in this country. My humble suggestion to Tun, before you inhale your last breath, please stop the non-sense that you have started. From begining your policy was very good but in actual fact this policy must not prolong for very long time. The privillege given to 'them' last time is noT for it to be stop. NO ONE CAN STOP IT. IT WILL CONTINUE FOREVER BECAUSE WHEN SOMEONE ALREADY COMFORTABLE OF THE INCOME HE USE TO GET, HE WILL NOT LET ANYONE TO STOP THAT INCOME COMING TO HIM. TUN, WHAT HAPPENING IN THIS COUNTRY IS ALL THE SIDE-EFFECT AND IT WILL TURN FROM BAD TO WORST.

Lest we Forget
written by Even Keel , September 14, 2007
TDM needs to first publicly apologise to all Malaysians for the wrongdoings of his era if he expects his criticisms of the present government to be taken seriously. Not just the ISA and weakening of the royalty. While a few BN linked companies and individuals got very rich during the TDM reign, we also had 22 years of unmitigated worsening of air pollution, traffic jams, drug abuse, increased crime rates, bohsia, bojan, rise of money politics, youth lepaking in city malls, neglect of the agricultural sector, etc. We love you TDM but please do not come down hard on Pak Lah. Need we also mention that four years after TDM became PM we had a worse economic crisis (1983-86)in Malaysia than what it is today? As was the case with TDM, Pak Lah too needs time to get his plans together.

A lesson learnt late
written by mychai , September 04, 2007
Executive power is a very precarious thing.
Power inthe hands of one man sometimes is dangerous.
History has proven this.

What is current has been practised.
the legacy continues..as the the saying "what goes around comes around."

The current strong Royal voice says much to the fact that our cabinet needs to be more determined in addressing abuse of power. There must be transparency in spending public money..this needs to be addressed as in the past it was covered up in the OSA act.

Paarliament and the cabinet must display a stronger will to uphold the Constitution and must not be afraid to call for impeachment of the judges or the prime minister if they do not uphold theeir sacred duties.

Malaysia is far from thie. In oher developed countries ministers ahve the integrity to resign knowing that they are no more welcome after they fail in their duties..not in Malaysia ..they still cling on...comfortably.
Malaysia needs ot watch where she is heading as recent events are showing that she may be heading for Islamic Fundamentalism.
Judges and leaders must uphold the sanctity of the Constitution to be fair to a multiracial society.
Mahathir did some good for the nations
..however he has also shaken some of the very foundations of justice and fair play.

consolidating power totally and hanging on to power for too long..is the end result of "what goes aaround comes around"

It is the abuse of the system that we give one man too much power..now it is being repeated..

the country and the cabinet must be able to impeach the chief judges and including a prime minister if it needs be. We are far from such it.

Recent event has shown the people are not being given a transparent picture on government expenses and trials both civil and non civil.

the country after 50 years of independence is teethering...on Islamic fundamentalism and may be unable to undo what Anwar had done previously.

Malaysia going to the dogs
written by Non-bumi , August 24, 2007
At least Mahathir was able to steer away from Islamic extremism during his reign. The current regime is making efforts to talibanize Malaysia through the implementation of Syariah Law, an absolutely stupid and senseless move considering how well the English Law has served us. It is an indication of weak leadership and total indifference and disregard for the rights of the minorities. As Malaysia celebrate it's 50th indpendence, all Malaysians will do well to contemplate on what they are about to lose and weep for their coming generations. Recently Badawi gave assurances that Malaysia is not a theocracy and that he will be fair to all races. Well, if he cant keep his promises, Malaysians should be prepared to kick him out for good.
