The country’s highest court rules that a Kuala Lumpur woman can’t convert to Christianity
See Also: Doing the Impossible: Quitting Islam in Malaysia
Joy, 43, remains a recluse, fearing retaliation in Malaysia’s always edgy religious and ethnic atmosphere. She cannot legally marry her non-Muslim partner, a cook, because the law requires non-Muslims to convert to Islam if they wish to marry someone of that faith. She has not spoken to the press since her case became public. She converted to Christianity when she was 26. Although the case was decided nearly a year ago, the federal court delayed its public ruling, partly because of the thorny legal issues and the question of whether the country’s federal courts should defer to syariah law. Despite the fact that Malaysia is largely a moderate Islamic country, only about 60 percent of its citizens are Muslims, existing in an uneasy balance with the mostly Chinese Christian, Buddhist or Taoist minority who make up about 25 percent of the population. Indians and other minorities make up another 11 percent.
Authorities earlier this week were urging calm, as were Muslim religious leaders. The victory in court should defuse any further concerns, although Christian opponents were expected to be holding silent vigils and issuing statements. The reform organization Aliran issued a statement saying that: "The freedom of religion guaranteed by the Federal Constitution under Article 11 comes across as hollow and meaningless. This decision has totally rendered null and void the freedom of religion guaranteed by the Federal Constitution. Under the circumstances, the Federal Court’s decision has a devastating effect on issues of fairness and justice. Concerned citizens will rightly wonder whether the judiciary is capable of delivering justice for those who turn to it. They will be turned away from the judicial system of the country thinking that the judges who are sworn to uphold the Federal Constitution in the course of their duty are not living up to their oath of office."
It is not possible to be an ethnic Malay in Malaysia without being a Muslim. Apostasy or conversion is a punishable offence in most states, either with a fine or a jail sentence or both. Muslims dominate most of the public institutions and have done so since bloody 1969 riots that officially killed 192 persons on both sides of the ethnic divide, but are presumed to have killed hundreds more
Despite the fact that one clause of the country’s original federal constitution guarantees freedom of religion, another, added later, states that “State law and in respect of the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur and Labuan, federal law may control or restrict the propagation of any religious doctrine or belief among persons professing the religion of Islam." Generally, the government has sought to stay out of the issue and has referred questions over apostasy or conversion to the country’s syariah. Not surprisingly, the syariah courts have ruled unanimously that ethnic Malays must remain Islamic.
Malaysia, however, is on an increasingly secular path on all sides of the ethnic and religious divide. On a breakneck path to modernization for the past 25 years, urban citizens of all ethnic groups have become more secular, with young Malays adopting miniskirts, jeans and all the accoutrements that go with modern lifestyles. Religious and government leaders have watched that with increasing concern.
Accordingly – and especially with the departure of former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, an authoritarian figure who largely kept ethnic concerns isolated -- official Islam is stiffening its resistance. The syariah courts have particularly refused to budge on any issues involving a change of religion. One woman, Kamariah Ali, who joined a sect and publicly renounced Islam in 1999, was ordered jailed in 2005 on charges of “insulting Islam.” . Then, last year, a mountaineering hero and Army corporal named Manyan Moorthy died of cancer and was buried in a Muslim cemetery with Muslim rites despite the fact that his wife insisted he had never converted. The civil High Court ruled that it could not overrule the syariah court that had declared him a Muslim.
Religious tensions have occasionally flared. Last November, Muslims gathered outside a Catholic church in Ipoh after text messages that the church was preparing to baptize a group of Malays, including a celebrated yachtsman, Azhar Mansor, who had sailed around the world single-handedly in 1999 without an engine. Azhar, who no longer lives in Malaysia, is widely believed to be a quietly practicing Christian although he has denied it. Although the SMS proved to be false, authorities were forced to move in to forestall violence. Unverified accusations of mass conversions into Christianity by Malays have been swirling in the press and blogs, further stoking the fire.
The attorney general’s chambers announced recently that it was considering establishing a commission to study religious-sensitive cases like Joy’s, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Nazri Abdul Aziz. The commission, if it comes to into existence, is expected to include religious leaders of all faiths. The government wants a system in which disputes such as conversion, especially when it involves children, can be addressed in an ‘extra legal manner.'
The most recent incident that has gripped Malaysians and make international headlines is the forced separation of a Muslim woman, Siti Fatimah, from her husband, Suresh Veerapan, who contended that Siti was no longer a Muslim and in fact a practicing Hindu born to Muslim parents, and that her name is actually Revathi Masoosai. Islamic religious officials charged Siti Fatimah with committing apostasy and ordered for her sent to a ‘rehabilitation’ center for almost 100 days. Her detention was extended another 80 days in April. In an interview with the television network Al Jazeera, Siti Fatimah’s mother said she would raise the couple’s 15-month-old granddaughter as a Muslim.

As I read the article and the comments, only one thing occurs to me. Those who wrote the article wants Lina Joy's case to start off a racial debate. And the people who wrote these comments have taken a good part in that debate. Sorry Lina, your case didn't win. Sorry courts, you will never win over Lina or people like her. Lina may already be in preparation on executing her plan b, god knows what. Doesn't matter which God of course!

Anyway, everyone seem to know their history well but too bad it has become such a bad joke on this site. Wether the winner are the politicians, courts, justice, muslims or Islam itself, the losers have not lost the battle at all. Don't get so emotional. Bad mouthing the common malays does not get you anywhere. And to all common malays, the indians and chinese can go back to their native countries as china and india are developing into gigantic economic powers. But you guys can't go back to indonesia as they struggling with their very own oversized population. And I don't think they will ever think of you guys as their own kin. So don't shoot your mouth off. Malaysia is moving backwards when it comes to racial issues because some people really try very hard to politicise it. If other countries, even Indonesia where millions of people are practising muslims, can let their fellow muslims go, why can't us? Many of the muslims I know go to indonesia or singapore to legalise their marriage to non-muslims partners. Maybe it's time we should start tolerating too. It may path way to better understanding. report abuse

Religion was God's plan to unite human being who were so divided in their languages. Lets leave it as such. All comments point at 1 issue: we are all human that we are far from being perfect. Even Prophet Muhammad was a plain human being, born just the way we were. We will continue to search the best way to be near God...one that we can do with ease. So what ever human made law say about Lina Joy's belief status, let her have her peace with God. Lets not condemn her nor compare religions. We are knowledgeable humans with high EQ. For once lets not emulate the politicians in Gaza/Israel,least we may be tricked by Satan into a physical war. No matter how small a war is,humans will still be the losers.

How can we not be insulting to Islam? It's a ridiculous ideology that makes supernatural claims for itself without providing any evidence. Or do Muslims really believe* that an illiterate merchant was appointed by a fairy-being to become the author of the final testament of "god"? *Stupid question! Of course they believe this nonsense - with a fanatical certainty that masks their complete insecurity. That's why they have to threaten to throw people in prison, or even kill them, for the "crime" of apostasy. report abuse

to be honest,i'm a 19yr old teenage bumiputra muslim,i'm not malay, but not really a religious person. i hv many non-muslim relatives,i hv frens who hv converted from islam and have but keep it a secret ,and i know people who get married e/though they hv different religion n hv kids..i dunno how that work..they all are very good ppl.. the point is,this is malaysia n we practice democracy here,every1 hv the right to speaks n from what i learn we are free to practice whatever religions that we want..so why is that when ppl converting to islam its all easy for them and when muslim convert they bcome like the bad ppl?double-standard? it just seem so unfair to me..n it really make me upset to see many of the apostates are being threatened for death just for changing their believes.they hv their right being violated! malaysia being a democracy country with the ppl are free to practice their faith n the denying lina joy for her conversion hv cause fear among other muslim who hv convert.they hv to live in their country with fear,n for all i know malaysia is a peaceful country with no war..some hv to flee from this country..how sad is that? as for lina joy,i'm sorry for her,she had battled years for her conversion n i compliment her 4 her bravery to step 4ward to follow the law procedures n all the hardship..she doesnt just flee to other country..but now, after all the fight for what she thinks is right eventually she hv to make that choice..flee..n i'm curious, even if she is a muslim(in her ID) and we all know she is an apostate, dont you think it'll make islam look bad?islam in ID but practicing other religion instead?i think this is like the act of denial..denying the truth..not only that,it make islam like something to fear about. is that islam is? some may think i'm naive,i'm a traitor etc..i just state my views from what i think is right.. hope things will get better in the future.. report abuse

I am not "ladang' for my husband I hate that term). I have my rights to refuse sex if I am not in the mood. I am not an animal. I believe in God, not interested to convert in any other religion but I also do not want to practice Islam. But in Malaysia the Malays can't tolerate this...the school are forcing my children to learn Islamic, there are discrimination and teachers are acting horribily to my chidlren when I said I don't want them to take Islamic....I can be charged if I dont fast in Ramadhan...etc People like me wants freedom...citizen of Malaysia should be given freedom to choose whether to put their religion in MYKAD or not and leave out bin or binti... For this ANAK MELAYU DOK DI MELBOURNE, please go to a small island and live among your Muslim and Malays only! It's sad to see man with a wrong sense of GOD, LIFE & CREATION, etc, fighting & insulting each other in the NAME OF GOD. All claiming that their GOD is the REAL ONE. GOD is having a tough time gut HE is laughing at the follishness of man. It will be better for all man who commented on this issued, first, to gain wisdom, knowlwdge & understanding of their own religion & GOD as well as the other religions & "GODs" before commenting. Every religion has its way of life, that if you were to study them, they all have many very common similarities & message of life & GOD. So every Christian, Hindu, Buddist, etc can also emphasise, "ONCE A ......, ALWAYS A ....".The way I look at this whole episode is that all of you are shallow on the wisdom, knowledge & understanding of GOD and MAN. I must confess that I am no better. Only when you know your neighbour, you will know yourself. Please stop the abuse & insult of GOD, each other and religions. Just accept the fact that LINA JOY is a Christian & let her live & let live. Just as there a lots of man who accept Islam, Buddism, Hindusim, etc and there's no fuss about it. It take a wise and learned man to accept such. So instead of harping on this issue, let us move forward in harmony, peace & unity for a better world. May the Peace of GOD be with us. Amen

Not only they sound insulting, I can see hatred towards Islam is clearly displayed. I must say they are also injustice and prejudice towards Islam. The conversion from Islam to other religion is not new in Malaysia. In fact, it happened so many times already, though the 'murtads' (people who quitting Islam) never officially denounce it, making the situation looks less significant. The concern about the issue only arise since the last decade after a considerable high number of application to quit Islam was received by the Malaysian Islamic authority. I would have writing more about it but since not many people are professional enough to think about it, I think I better to leave it just like that. Honestly, I also not approving the act of quitting Islam after the person once bear that there's no God but Allah and Muhammad is His messenger. It only shows his/her ungratefulness. report abuse

Narrated Abu Burda: .... The Prophet then sent Mu'adh bin Jabal after him and when Mu'adh reached him, he spread out a cushion for him and requested him to get down (and sit on the cushion). Behold: There was a fettered man beside Abu Muisa. Mu'adh asked, "Who is this (man)?" Abu Muisa said, "He was a Jew and became a Muslim and then reverted back to Judaism." Then Abu Muisa requested Mu'adh to sit down but Mu'adh said, "I will not sit down till he has been killed. This is the judgment of Allah and His Apostle (for such cases) and repeated it thrice. Then Abu Musa ordered that the man be killed, and he was killed. Abu Musa added, "Then we discussed the night prayers and one of us said, 'I pray and sleep, and I hope that Allah will reward me for my sleep as well as for my prayers.'" (Sahih Bukhari 9.58, also Sahih Bukhari 9.271) Narrated Ikrima: Ali burnt some people [hypocrites] and this news reached Ibn 'Abbas, who said, "Had I been in his place I would not have burnt them, as the Prophet said, 'Don't punish (anybody) with Allah's Punishment.' No doubt, I would have killed them, for the Prophet said, 'If somebody (a Muslim) discards his religion, kill him.' " (Sahih Bukhari 4.260) report abuse

Perhaps you meant that Islam is a "completely demented religion", in which case I agree wholeheartedly. Or do you really believe, on the basis of no evidence, that an "angel" descended on an illiterate merchant in a cave somewhere on the Arabian peninsula in order to dictate the contents of a yet-to-be-written book! That's a preposterous fable, I'm afraid to say, though I'd still be happy to defend your right to believe this nonsense on the condition that you do not violate the right of other people NOT to believe in it. But you just can't hold up that end of the deal, can you? No, because you're terrified that a mere trickle of Lina Joy's, Siti Fatimah's et al, might turn into a flood of defections from Islamic lunacy. And we can't have that, my dear Bumis, can we? Heaven forbid that we will let people make up their own minds about superstition without harassing them in the courts, taking away their right to choose their own spouse, or even locking them up in "detention" (i.e. prison) for 6 months in order to brainwash them back into the "faith"! No, much better that we lock up "dangerous" apostates like Siti Fatimah so as to maintain a false "communal harmony" at the behest of Islamic nutters. report abuse

I wish to reply to jemz: Every religion claims to state the truth. I am not saying that QURAN is not stating the truth. I'm also not saying that other religions not stating the truth. But where is the choice? If I no longer believe in something as the truth, isn't htat my choice? I may go to hell for my choice BUT it is still MY choice nontheless. Which religion "compels, coerce and forces" people to believe it? None. Except Islam here in Malaysia. Does Islam in Malaysia really need to "compel, coerce and force"? If a religion is confident in itself, it will not need to "compel, coerce or force" to maintain members. Which other religion in the world, Christianity, Buddhism, Sikhism, Taoism needs to do this? People willingly follow and people can leave by choice. Where is the choice is Islamism? For myself, because of this reason alone, I will never subscribe to a religion that does not believe in giving its believers a choice.

I think that the people of Muslim faith in Malaysia are extremely "lacking in confidence" to the extent that even when people have renounced Islam and admitted that they have not and will not subscribe to the rules and teachings of Islam, the islamist still want to "force" them to remain a "Muslim-in-name"? Why? Is Islam so "lacking in confidence" that it needs to "force people to remain in Islam or snatch dead bodies away to be buried as Muslims etc? Are they afraid that if they open up, people will leave the religion in droves? hence the need to "use force adn coercion"? It shows a religion that is not confident of holding its own in a free world...just like how the Malays in Malaysia feel that they cannot hold their own in a free world (hence the need to continue with the subsidy and crutches mentality).

A person can be a Muslim without a label on a MyKad as long as they are born to a Muslim and/or practices Islam truthfully. Forcing of religious beliefs is not an Islamic practice. It is an ancient Arab and medieval European practice. I have lived and worked in several Muslim and non-Muslim countries and have one thing to say. Most policy-makers here may not have had the chance to widen their understanding of what they are doing, so we have to live with it for now.

It insults me and my beliefs to see people in tudung and veils, or going for prayers, wondering whether it is because they seek to practice Islam from their heart or have to do it because of peer or family pressure.... whether they just know what they have to do or they actually understand what they are doing. If Lina Joy has already believed she was a Christian for so long, and practiced Christianity, despite the label on her MyKad, she is no longer a Muslim. In all sensibility, changing her label on the MyKad would no longer be something done to a Muslim anyway as she has not been one for a long time. The issue here is not religious or racial. It is how a large group of people who may have limited understanding, has let their interpretations and limited understanding affect the personal rights of another human being against the teachings they claim to understand itself. This is not a Malay, Muslim, or Malaysian thing. Things like these happen everywhere in every form. It's just a lot less reported despite how much "press freedom" is claimed in those countries. report abuse

Who will judge you on Judgement Day?
written by Blessed Christian , December 17, 2007
To Zoukie, please dont speak evil of Jesus Christ. Yes, He didnt ask us to celebrate Christmas and there was actually no such thing as Santa Claus. I kesian you that u dont even know that Santa has been a commercial gimmick eversince he was invented...to add spirit of giving presents to one another on Christ's Birthday because of the fact that religious men actually who brought valuable gifts as they visited HIM in the place HE was born. To those who condemned Christianity and Jesus Christ, please be reminded that Jesus Christ is the one and only Son of GOD willed by GOD to lay judgement on u Muslims and Christians alike on Judgement Day, correct me if I am wrong!

We Don\'t Want Religious Nuts but Spiritual Beings
written by Truth , November 27, 2007
All well said, we are still human beings experiencing life on earth. When it comes to our religious believe, it is a choice that we make, and solely ourselves, no one else. We are talking about our believe system, our faith. Lets not force upon one another. God has given all of us a mind and to make our own decision on what feels right for ourselves. Lina Joy has made her decision, she embrassed Christianity. Let her be. It is not ours to say wheater she is right or wrong. Let God deal with her. Lets not judge her. With this, by right, she or anyone by that matter should not be subjected to any court of law to get her new religious believe approved. I believe it is the basic human law, to have the freedom of choice. Love is devine, and if she wants to marry the person she loves, we should not be obstructing them, by forcing both of them to embrass Islam in order to get married here in Malaysia. No one, be it if you are a devote Muslim, Christian, Buddist, Hindu, would like it, if you were forced to embrassing another religion that you not want to embrasse.

We could respect islam more were it truly a religion, making it a private matter, and one can leave it in peace if one's heart is no longer with it. A religion that's not a persuasion becomes virtually a cult. A persuasion is not composed of and by a set of "obligations", it must stay persuasion by choice. report abuse

Federal constituition
written by nonesyee , October 30, 2007
Yes! I have to agree that i am proud to be malaysian. After working and staying years in more than 3 countries with full of luxuries but full of lies and crimes, I cannot deny and do not want to see the harmony in Malaysia to be jeopardized by the negative thinking fractional of the people. Also the non-muslims cannot be blame on this since they do not know the impact of being apostasy since they have no or limited knowledge about Islam depsite Islam is the constituitional religion of Malaysia. As the current trend of the society thinking and way of life always keep changing & unpredictable, the muslim leaders must make effort to ammend the Federal Constituition Article 11 in a form that to protect Islam and muslims according to the Koran despite the freedom of religion. The KEY word is; whoever apostasy or reverted from Islam, he or she are subjected to Islamic law will allow the authority to impose the CAPITAL punishment according to the shariah law. Islam is an easy, a way of life religion, only the people make it hard. Islam do not force people to embrace Islam, but once you re muslims you have to submit to Islam without more or less. Therefore to avoid the ignorance to argue about the issue, the constitution must be ammended to fit the current situation. Above all this will restrain people from mocking Islam. We want committed believers. Let us face the truth and people who thinking to revert or become apostasy will think more than 10 times....peace.

Ah, Malaysia...
written by ashutosh , October 22, 2007
I am an Indian, and I visited Malaysia recently to attend an academic conference and stayed at Sebang Jaya. I met quite a few people in Malaysia and went to places near Kuala Lumpur, Putra Jaya, and also went up the Petronas Towers. I was enthralled to see the development that Malaysia has achieved, considering that after WW II, nearly all Asian countries started off on almost an equal footing. In fact, I personally do not consider Malaysia to be an 'emerging' economy- it is more like a developed economy already. The success of Petronas in the world petrochemical business is spectacular, more so as it comes from an Asian country!
Votes: +5
But when I read this kind of news and associated comments, I do realize that Malaysia has still to achieve a 'developed' mindset, that will make the country truly developed. My only request to ALL of you in Malaysia is this- do realize what you have achieved so far, and do not fritter it away through such diversions. What does it matter who you worship? God is one, and everyone loves HIM. Do I have to prove my love to God by bad mouthing someone else? I think you all should focus on keeping your country vibrant through hard and intelligent work & thought- these issues that essentially drain your energy are not worthy of you. Focus on the vision of your great leaders- they have brought you this far, now you have to go further. I admire Malaysia and ALL its people, and I want to retain my admiration for you. report abuse

When lakhs were forcibly converted to Islam in several countries here one cannot shift faith officially though mentally or otherwise one does not belong to that religion. This is a serious case of fundamentalism in a free world with human freedom. This is agains Human Rights. How can such religions be tolerated in the modern age of diminishing faith in God. Are such compulsions coming out of faith on God or anything else?

For the benefit of foreigners reading this site, Malaysians do really coexist peacefully and harmoniously. With the exception of a few angry comments most people there live quite comfortably amongst all the mosques, churches and temples. When I lived there, my house at christmas used to be filled with friends from every religious background. Most people take each other for what they are be it muslim, hindu, christian etc. Regarding Lina Joy, her heart doesn't belong to Islam so why do you want her there. If you believe so, then she will be judged by Allah.

Muslims, Christians, Buddist, Hindus and the whole human race, respect our human beings even though we don't agree with what they believe in. We all speak different languages, eat different foods, live in different circumstances, are of a different race, nationality...and colour, and most importantly have different beliefs because it would be so impossible to only have one religion........it would be nice to respect that. report abuse

All those in favor of Christianity will know but still deny that its a fabricated religion. Let me make this clear especially to Lina Joy. Jesus never celebrated Chrismas. Nor asked his followers to do so. Nor did he seem to know that you Christians will today. And who the hell's Santa? The only morals they have is whatever the majority decides. Not what God decides. By the way, speaking of God... Have you people decided whether God is one or three yet by now? (I mean its been more than 2000 years). Oh the dilemma. Peace out.

WOMEN\'S RIGHTS - what\'s that?
written by a guest , August 18, 2007
I wonder why it is not possible for a Muslim to convert: are Muslim religious leaders afraid that if religion is a CHOICE too many would convert? If yes, well, then obviously these people are not happy with their religion. If not, why force them to remain Muslim?
Votes: +0
And even if conversion to Islam might be considered by some (Christian) partners of muslims, the fact that WOMEN’S RIGHTS are absolutely KICKED AND PUNCHED under Sharia Law in Malaysia is probably the decisive factor for not doing so and rather not marrying the person you love or emigrate and leave country and family in order to be with your chosen partner. A real shame for Malaysia. Singapore is opening its doors to foreign talent, Malaysia, that needs some talent in economcis and other areas, much more desperatly than Malaysian, LOCKS all doors. Continue singing your "all men" and "all bumiputra" song - in years to come, Malaysia will be suffer for that. report abuse

Jangan kutuk Melayu, kutuk Islam takpe....
written by kebenaran , August 09, 2007

The fact is can marry or do what ever she want but officially the Malay civil service is afraied to take the rational steps to leave out Islam in her official id. It used to be easier when Malays were easy going but now they are scared stiff of God...! due to their misereable understanding of the Arabic relgion. They are alomost cartoonish in their trust of Islam. Their non comprehension of Arabic adding to the almost mythical elevation of Islam that even the Arabs themselves don't believe in. I don't know why knowadays ppl always try to argue about the issue of religion. For me, all religions are the same cause they teach human to become good. Does anybody dared to say I'm wrong. It doesn't matter it's ISLAM, CHRISTIAN, BUDDHIST, HINDU or whatever. They are teaching the same things. Let me ask one question. If let say there's a man who is Christian and he always do the bad things such as killing, raping and robbing, he will also go to heaven. And does it means like for example a man who is Muslim and keep doing good deeds in his life such a donating money, caring, humble and etc, he will go to hell just because he's not christian. Come on, does it make sense? The above is just example. Not to criticise any religion. For me i respect each of every religion like my own religion. Let me tell you one thing. There's only one GOD. God created so many religions in order to test our tolerance between each and every human in this world. After, we die, I believed all of us will be judged by the good and bad we did in our life to determine who can go to heaven and who to hell. It's not been judged like what religion you from. As for racial sentiment, I beg all Malaysians to stop criticising other race. No matter what race you from but all of us are Malaysians. We are born in the same land, grow up in the same land and work hard for our country. nobody can dicriminate any one. Ok. Do not relate chinese to China and Indian to India pls. Maybe our great great grandparents were from there but for this generation, we are not related to those two countries anymore. I love my motherland Malaysia and I will fight till the last drop of blood to protect it. I hope all I explained above can restored the brotherhoods of all Malaysian where we had before. Pls. Do not be like our neighbouring countries who keep killing between each others. When that happen, nobody gonna win. Everyone will suffer. Thanks for your time. report abuse

Lets stop belittling religion and respect each other as humans. In a family, having a misunderstanding or argument is normal, thus will ever a father or mother wish ill on their offsprings. We are in flesh and blood same but differ only in appearance, so let us not get carried away by ill wishing others. There is NO joy in HATRED. UNTIL WE BELIEVE WE ARE HUMANS THROUGH N THROUGH, NO RELIGION CAN CLAIM TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

I think Malaysia is a nice place full of lots of interesing people. Visiting, I get a feeling I do not find any where else. There are lots of issues that need to resolved there. Actually in a Muslim country with Sharia law if someone converts to Islam they should be given a chance to change their mind. If they don't they should be killed, (not in M'sia though). However, if you look at the teachings of both religions, it's clear which one is superior. But you have to look with an open mind. May malaysians like m'sia for what it is, and appreciate it more when they visit other countries. Everyone just has to work together for the common good without giving people advantages that do not deserve it.

There is always faulty in laws made by human to control human, if they think it should be like that, then let it be. we all have our own standings, we know what is right and what is wrong. According to muslim law, I also think the court decision is not right. In Islam we have to respect others' religions. They can choose and we have to respect it. But in this world, money has power, and certain people have control on certain things that others don't. So... if we can't make it right, just let it be... God knows who is right and who is wrong... but we must still respect others. Amin.

It is an exciting world out there
written by Ex Chinese-M'sian , June 18, 2007
I am an ex Malaysian of Chinese decend but now residing in Shanghai. My advice to all Chinese is, don't waste your precious time arguing with these Malay medieval & feudalistic barbarians for they will eventually run this country to the ground & M'sia will become irrelevant in Asia, much less to the rest of the world. Do you know there are thousands of successful Chinese M'sians already excelling in China, Taiwan & Hong Kong, let alone our neighbour S'pore? M'sian artists are doing exceptionally well in China, Taiwan & HK - Michael Wong, Penny Tai, Mohan etc..When you consider a theatre as large as 1.4 billion people, what is the weightage of 24 million of M'sia? It's mere peanut! Hence, for Chinese in M'sia, please go out to explore the whole wide world & not live with these arse-holes Bumi barbarians under their tiny little coconut shell! Do you realise almost 60% of the S'pore Cabinet Ministers, 90% of their fighter jets pilots, 90% of their hard sciences R & D labs & other highly sensitive posts are held by ex M'sians? There are already giant Parksons, Shangrila Hotels every where in China, even many small Klang bak-kut-teh stores are beginning to make their impacts in the smaller cities & towns in China! What is most striking is these Mainland Chinese welcome us like long-lost distant relatives & they always go out of their way to make us feel comfortable! They never forget the helps overseas Chinese extended to them during their hardships during the anti Japanese war in the 30's & they consistent say, this time around when China is already strong & powerful, they will no longer allow M'sia or Indonesia to kill their Chinese minorities so blatantly & arbitrarily without arousing a firm response from China! So for the young, talented & wealthy Chinese, come to Greater China! Do you know you may be participating in a historic mission in building the most powerful, prosperous & advanced nation in the world unprecedented in human history? Forget these arse-holes Malays! Let them die in their sweet dreams forever chanting `Alahu Akhbar' !

Ms Joy has chosen
written by v , June 09, 2007
I am somewhat surprised at all the negative feelings and hatred generated here. Some comments were too personal and totally irrelevant to Ms Lina Joy's case. Is it necessary to humiliate other people and their religion? Islam is not a religion that one embraces and leaves at one's whim and fancies, neither for that matter other religions. Ms Lina however has chosen her religion (has been for 17 years now) and perhaps has even chosen the perfect country to live in with her loved one. If Malaysia is really as bad as is portrayed, then isn't she lucky to have fled this country?.

Islam--Not a religion of reason
written by no brainer , June 05, 2007
I cannot understand this. If the faith of Islam is so strong and bond so powerful, there should not be all the force and violence needed to keep people in the religion. If the truth is so strong, why the need for force. Reason and truth should prevail to persuade people (humans) to accept God or Allah? To me, it is the fear that the truth is not there that these people use force and violent to put fear into people so that they do leave the religion. That is why we see all the violence when ever any criticism is made of the religion.

yes, i know, behind all the peaceful country upfront, we have issues going on. yes, its true. but so does every other country. and truth be said, the peace we have now, despite the conflicts, is hard to find anywhere else. there is still be discrimination in every country, in china (despite everyone being 'putih'), in india (where the population is , what you call 'gelap'), in america (the acclaimed 'free country'), in indonesia (where you can never tell a person's religion and race based on looks). its everywhere. i am not saying that we should just take all the crap others put to our face, but we can really learn how to handle this wisely, with our brains intact, that is. in this Lina Joy case, if she still persist in her heart to be a Christian, she is one, and no Malaysian court can stop that. she is no longer a Muslim. your religion is what in your heart. and if you ask any Muslim, they will tell you this too. from the law point of view, the Constitution states in Article 11 that everyone can profess and practise their freedom freely, but the Constitution also added that this is not entirely so for the ones professing Islam. (below is the First and Fourth Clause in Article 11 of Malaysian Constitution) Article 11 1. Every person has the right to profess and practice his religion and, subject to Clause (4), to propagate it. 4. State law and in respect of the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur and Labuan, federal law may control or restrict the propagation of any religious doctrine or belief among persons professing the religion of Islam. thus, clearly, the court's decision IS according to the constitution. and as Malaysians who choose to be Malaysians, we MUST respect that. report abuse

NO BIG DEAL (See John 3:15)
written by michael soh , June 01, 2007
Lina Joy is a Christian. She is not denied from receiving Christ as her personal Savior by the courts of Malaysia. So, lets stop focusing on differences and aggrevating the differences to pain. We live in a multi racial country. Such discussion, in the tone of divinding people and sowing mistrust with each other will only hurt everyone.
Votes: +1
The bible does not say that we will loose our salvation if we are lable as a non believer by man. Man is not greater than God. No where in the bible that says, we will loose our passport to heaven if we are burried in a wrong burial ground. All these arguement are waste of time for Christians. We matured Christians look at the spiritual realm of life. We worship our lord in Spirit and in Truth. Spiritually, Lina Joy is abundant of joy in Christ. The Truth, she has her full blessing and joy to worship Christ as her personal savior. Jesus never advocate confrontational ways to fight for titles or lables. He is against all forms of confrontation with non believers. He is only confrontational towards our own kind ( pharasees )......... never towards a non believer. If we live by the sword, we die by the sword..........says Jesus. Lets focus on building bridges and stop running down our fellow Malaysians. I am proud to live in Malaysia and we should do what it takes to make it work in Malaysia. Malaysia is for all Malaysian. report abuse

A label in an identity card does not rob her from her spirtual blessing. Nor her passport to heaven. Our God sees us in spirit and in truth. We worship Him in Spirit and in Truth. Spiritually, Lina Joy is a Christian. The Truth, she accepted Christ as her personal savior. Focusing on labels, arousing differences in the flavour of JUSTICE can be very dangerous in a multi racial country. Trying to fight pressure with pressure is self defeating. Try to show love to win souls is the solution that Christ always shared with his followers. He is against any form of "confrontation" with non believers. He is only confrontational with Pharasees (our own kind). If we live by the sword, we died by the sword......says Jesus. (no way in the bible says that you loose your salvation if you are wrongly lable as a non believer or you are burried in a wrong burial ground..........these are carnal ways. Islam a false religion
written by historian , May 31, 2007
Islam is a false religion invented by the Arab Muhammad who was mentally deranged, suffered from severe fits caused by hallucinations, who plagiarised from the Torah as he lived among the jews who were verykind to him and whom he repaid with their slaughter years later; a paedophile who lusted after his 'brother" Abu Bakar's infant daughter from the time she was born and convinced him that the pagan god o the hindus which Muhammad copied as the divine one decreed that Ayesha was to be his - the sex maniac never had a virgin wife; a bandit who conducted raids every month hence muslims from his time to today are robbers in every sense of the word - malaysia is prime example , robbing from the non malays properties through the Land Acquisition Act, parasites feeding off from the chinese who contribute to 85% of the country's taxes; a quick glance at the OIC countries show that all muslims are in the pithell known as failed states. Islam is a cult of DEATH

to their own as well as others. SATAN'S INVENTION CARRIED OUT BY MUHAMMAD. ISLAM SHOWN TO BE JEWISH HERESY Written by To The Point, Inc. Thursday, 18 January 2007 It has been suspected for over a millennium that Islam originated as a Jewish heresy. The constant references in the Koran to Moses and Noah, the claim of Arab descendance from Abraham, and the incessant demand that the Jews of Mecca accept Mohammed as their Messiah have always formed persuasive evidence. But there has never been any hard archaeological or documentational evidence - until now. Researchers at the Allahu Gawwad University at Majnoon, Saudi Arabia, recently discovered a parchment in a mountain cave near Mecca. Radiocarbon-14 dating confirmed its antiquity: 640 AD /- 30 years. Mohammed reportedly died in 632. Because of the explosive nature of its contents, written in ancient Arabic script, knowledge of the parchment has been the most tightly kept secret within the Saudi Kingdom - until now. To The Point’s clandestine sources within the Allahu Gawwad University have now been able to provide an English translation, proving at last the true origins of Islam. Here is the word-for-word translation of the ancient Arabic written upon the parchment. So stupid malays, subscribe and find out for yourself. Your own Mufti of Perak slams you wheel-chair bound, on crutches parasites as spending 4 billion on liquor and gambling. Hypocrites! Liars! Islamofascists! Malays - a doomed race! report abuse

Regarding the "spread of Islam by the sword", I would like to point out that in the 50's, PAS(or PIMP, at that time), had a policy of "the sword or the koran"; this was the 6th tenet of Islam. This did not gain favour with the rest of Malaya, including UMNO. Over time, esp with Dr M, the idea of "muslim superiority and malay superiority" began to take root. This, I believe, was because Dr M realised the the NEP was failing. The only way to galvanise the Malays now was the introduction of something with strong emotional and religious overtones which can roughshord over more important issues/values like self reliance, hard workingness, sense of achievement etc. Hence you see now in Malaysia, the obsecession with Muslim dress code, "indecent" behaviour in public, covering of the face with a veil. All the deviant Muslim sects, have one common feature: obsession with sex. Think I am conning you? Go and check it out for yourself. Malay achievments in any field of human activity requiring intelligence and hard work is abysmal. Of course, there are the odd one out. I know, because I teach postgraduates. The examination I prepare them for is prepared overseas, with visiting examiners. Inevitably Malay candidates want to know one thing. Does the government have any input in the examination. There is none - hence few Malays sit for this examination. The NEP has destroyed the core values of the Malays. Dr M is the man who did it. But the Malays don't see it. To them, Dr M is the man who will lead them to "malay superiority and muslim superiority". Dr M has done what the Jews want to done to Muslims, i.e. destroy them in the core. The whole psyche will then collapse; but the Malays will not know it, because they have not learned to use their brains to work out their problems.

Frog Under The Coconut Shell
written by To Hell With This Lazy Facist , May 31, 2007
The Malays are one of the most pathetic racial groups in the world. Virtually devoid of any measureable achievements, through hard sweat & toil of course & not those which money can procure (like the Petronas Twin Towers), to speak of, whether in science, technology, sports, economy & host of other human endeavours, it is utterly surprising that these people still persist to imagine that their country is still god-zone & paradise! While others (like Vietnam & Thailand)in S.E.Asia are busy finding their niche in a globalised world in building up their countries, the Malays squander their time & energies shadow boxing over virtually insignificant issues like race, religion, how much left to further wrest from the the more productive non-Malays etc (instead of wealth creation, they are more interested in the share of wealth others create).
Votes: +2
There is a buzz word amongst the foreign expat community - whatever the Malays touches, the object will invariably turn from `gold' to `coal'. This amply describes how lowly the Malays are generally regarded! There was even one article by an Australian by the name of Michael Backman who ridiculed the much hyped slogan `M'sia Boleh' as `M'sia Bodoh'. Of course, these negative insinuations are not made out of the blues. Just pause & look back at their mega blunders through the years - Proton, Perwaja, Bank Bumi, UMBC Bank, Bakun Dam, MSC, Kuantan Port, Airport (in terms of throughput), Tertiary Education (University ranking), school systems (national schools being turned into Islamic madrassas), crumbling civil service, MAS etc....& the list is endless. There was an interview by Aljeeera (Arabic TV Channel) on Dr Mahathir before he retired in which the Arab commentator rightly commented that all the visible signs of modernity in M'sia are virtually built single-handedly by the Chinese & Indians without any input from the Malays! These people are therefore mere modern day nuts! Look further at these vivid comparisons with tiny S'pore(which incidentally shares a common history with M'sia): .Per Capital Income - 1967, at par with M'sia; 2007, almost US$ 40000 vs US$5000 (in S'pore's favour) .GDP growth - 8% VS 5.6% .Exchange Rate - 1967, 1:1; 1970's, 1:1.1 (in Ringgit's favour); 2007, 2.3:1 (in S$'s favour) .S'pore became `developed status' in 2000, M'sia aspires to be one by 2020 (mere wishful thinking? God knows this will ever materialise!) .S'pore's economical fundamentals sucessfully restructured to becoming service, financial, biotech, hitech oriented; M'sia still struggling to find her niche .Immigration policy - S'pore throws her door wide open to skilled immigrants; M'sia still sings the bumiputra protectionist tunes! . lots of other examples too lengthy to elaborate It's time these Malays wake up instead of shouting Allahu Akhbar. Your Allah cannot win you any progress or meal on your table but will bring bombs, death, destruction from the Christian West! It would be really lovely to imagine a future scenario where there will be no Chinese & Indians left in M'sia, where M'sia will likely decend into a medievil feudal state. By then, the Malays will still find themselves marginalised because they still cannot compete with their more hardworking brethrens from Indonesia! What an aweful twisted irony! report abuse

Misrepresenting facts to demonise Islam

This case is NOT about Lina's right to convert. Nobody can stop what's in her heart; for all that matter she has already left Islam anyway. The issue at stake is, administratively, who has the power to change the details on her identity card. The Constitution states that ALL issues pertaining to Islam falls under the jurisdiction of the Shari'ah courts, not the High courts. The former is not subordinated to the latter, but runs parallel to it. If she wants to register her conversion, then she should seek the judgement from the Shari'ah courts, not the High Court. She refuses to do so, making a big deal of the matter, whereas such courts have previously allowed such conversion e.g. the case of Nyonya Tahir. I believe the so-called human rights groups are not sincere in highlighting this issue, as evident by their misleading everyone about the real issues affected. I believe they have an agenda to push. report abuse

This will help put to rest once & for all the myths of religious freedom of the Muslim community, the supremacy of the Constitution over the Syariah laws & the self-professed notion of a liberal & moderate Islamic UMNO government. This also represents a severe set back for secularism in multi-racial M'sia.
