It may be a puzzle to most foreigners that Ukrainians are so determined to resist Russia despite the horrendous losses among their outnumbered defenders. Do they not have similar languages and, mostly, adherence to the Orthodox Christian faith? Has not all or part of Ukraine long been part of a Russian-dominated state, whether Soviet or Tsarist?
